Attention: American Citizens Service Moves from Hamburg to Berlin

As of July 1, 2007, the American Citizen Services role of the U.S. Consulate General in Hamburg will be taken over by the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Berlin. This consolidation of consular services is part of a global effort to bring about greater efficiencies in how the U.S. Government conducts its diplomatic engagement overseas.

In light of the reduced need for U.S. citizens to come in person to a consular section for most routine business, the U.S. Mission in Germany is centralizing consular resources in Berlin, Frankfurt, and Munich to better provide a high level of service to American citizens resident in Germany.

In most cases it is no longer necessary to visit a consular section in person for routine consular assistance. Through technology, more services are available to U.S. citizens via the Internet. For example, U.S. citizen residents and visitors may register electronically using IBRS, can fill out and print passport applications on-line at www.travel.state.gov/, and can obtain overseas voter registration information and absentee ballot procedures at www.fvap.gov. Since the U.S. and Germany are both signatories to the Hague Legalization Convention, it is not necessary for an American consular officer to notarize documents for use in the United States. Documents may instead be legalized by German authorities who will affix a Hague "Apostille" certificate. More information can be found at www.hcch.net/.
