  2. Ames Laboratory to Lead New Research Effort to Address Shortages in Rare Earth and Other Critical Materials

    The U.S. Department of Energy announced today that a team led by Ames Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, has been selected for an award of up to $120 million over five years to establish an Energy Innovation Hub that will develop solutions to the domestic shortages of rare earth metals and other materials critical for U.S. energy security. The new research center, which will be named the Critical Materials Institute (CMI), will bring together leading researchers from academia, four Department of Energy national laboratories, as well as the private sector.

  3. ORNL helps kick off 2013 FIRST robotics season in East Tennessee

    Students from dozens of area high schools piled into Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Manufacturing Demonstration Facility Jan. 5 to get a sense of the obstacles they will be battling over the next six weeks. Hundreds of students, parents and mentors attended the kickoff event for the 2013 FIRST robotics competition, a nationwide event in which students design and build complex robots that can tackle the challenges of a specially designed game.

  4. Robot competition offers high-tech shot at real-world goals

    Students from several of the 30 area high school teams in the competition converged Saturday on Oak Ridge National Laboratories' Manufacturing Demonstration Facility in Knoxville. The students and their mentors watched the nationally televised 2013 game announcement, toured the facility and for the first time saw the official FIRST competition playing field for this year's game.
