The composition, structure, and function of biomolecules underlie the complex biology that is found in all organisms and is responsible for human health and disease, and our genetic diversity. Through measurement of biomolecules, the cellular and biomolecular processes of living systems can be understood and controlled to create new medicines and industrially useful products. We develop methods for the measurement of those molecules—proteins and nucleic acids, peptides, glycans, metabolites, lipids, and others—and provide reference materials and data that give biomedical researchers confidence in their measures. We work with members of the life sciences industry, other government agencies, and academia to support innovation in biotechnology, DNA forensics, biomedical and bioscience research, and health care.
