The Pelagic Longline Take Reduction Plan (PLTRP) is required under Section 118 of the Marine Mammal Protection Act to reduce serious injury and mortality (bycatch) of long-finned and short-finned pilot whales and Risso's dolphins in the Atlantic pelagic longline fishery. The PLTRP was developed by the Pelagic Longline Take Reduction Team (PLTRT) a multi-stakeholder group. The plan includes mandatory and voluntary management measures, as well as research recommendations to better understand the fishing gear and nature of marine mammal interactions incidental to this fishery.
More information about the PLTRT including key outcomes of meetings, the Pelagic Longline Take Reduction Plan, and affected species.
Take Reduction Plans are developed to prevent the depletion and assist in the recovery of certain marine mammal stocks that are seriously injured or killed in commercial fisheries.
