Maps and GIS Data
The National Marine Fisheries Service Southeast Regional Office produces maps and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data for a variety of uses. Some of the many applications that the the office produces data for are areas of habitat protection (Critical Habitats, Essential Fish Habitats and Habitats of Particular Concern), marine mammal tracking, stock assessments, protected resource management, and general fisheries management along with many others. On this page you will find links to several sets of maps and GIS data, classified by their corresponding application area. Please check back for EFH and fishery closure data and maps coming soon.
Critical Habitats
Under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, critical habitats may be designated by the National Marine Fisheries Service for threatened and endangered species under its jurisdiction. The maps and data on this page represent specific critical habitats for those species in the NMFS Southeast Region. These maps and data are for illustrative purposes only; the Federal Register should be consulted for the precise legal definition of critical habitat and geographic coordinates.
Below, maps and corresponding GIS data are listed alphabetically by species. Several formats are available for each map. Esri's ArcGIS software or Google Earth can be used to open shapefiles. Google Earth can also be used to open zipped KML files to view individual designated critical habitats. Metadata (information about the data file) for each GIS layer is also available in XML and HTML formats. Please left click on the appropriate blue hyperlink to view the file or right click and choose "Save As" to download the file.
