FHWA Research on GIS Applications for Transportation Asset Management

Study of Best Practices

FHWA is beginning a research project that will examine the current state of the practice regarding transportation asset management applications of GIS in the United States. Effective efforts at both the state DOT and local transportation agency levels will be highlighted in a report on best practices. Winter GIS in Transportation Newsletter

Newsletter now available online

The Winter GIS in Transportation Newsletter is now available here.

The winter newsletter includes an article by Todd Pierce, Research Scientist at the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) at the University of North Carolina (UNC)-Asheville. He discusses the development of the Multi-Hazard Risk Tool, an online mapping and reporting application.

Also included in the winter issue is an editorial by Ed Arabas, Senior Operations and Policy Analyst at the State of Oregon Department of Administrative Services.

Winter GIS in Transportation Webcast

Summary now available online

A summary of the winter GIS in Transportation webcast is now available here. The webcast speakers were Jason Wang of the Appalachian Regional Commission and Sang Yoo of the Nick J. Rahall, II Appalachian Transportation Institute. The speakers presented on and demonstrated the Appalachian Development Highway System's (ADHS) GIS.

GIS Practice of the Week

Maryland Department of Transportation's Coordinated Highways Action Reponse Team (CHART)

CHART is a joint effort of the Maryland Department of Transportation, the Maryland Transportation Authority, and the Maryland State Police, in cooperation with other Federal, state and local agencies. CHART's mission is to improve "real-time" operations of Maryland's highway system through teamwork and technology. The map interface allows users to view current traffic and emergency road conditions from across the state. There are six different map tabs to choose from: Traffic, Road Work, Hauling Restrictions, Roadway Weather, Video and Camera, and Information Devices.
