Major General Bert Mizusawa is the Reserve assistant to the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was commissioned infantry from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated first in his class. His education includes a J.D. from Harvard Law School, a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and a MacArthur PhD Fellowship at Harvard’s Belfer Center.
MG Mizusawa served as a paratrooper with the 1-509th Airborne Battalion Combat Team in Italy and commanded the Army’s largest and most forward-deployed infantry company in the Korean DMZ. As a reservist, he commanded a marine transportation battalion and the Army Reserve cyber command. His joint assignments include commander of a Joint Operational Analysis team in Afghanistan, Deputy to the Commanding General, Multinational Corps-Iraq and Deputy Director for Strategic Initiatives, J5, Joint Chiefs of Staff.
MG Mizusawa’s awards include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and the Combat Infantryman, Master Parachutist, Ranger, Pathfinder, Air Assault, Joint Chiefs of Staff and Army Staff badges.
As a civilian, Mizusawa was a Wall Street lawyer (1990-94), a Professional Staff Member on the Senate Armed Services Committee (1995-98), deputy undersecretary of the Army for interagency and international affairs (1998-01), and president of ITA, Inc., a technology firm (2001-04). In 2004, he founded Paxcentric, Inc., a consulting firm and serves as its president.
Mizusawa authored the national security platform for the 1996 presidential campaign and was a candidate for Congress in 2010. He has served as president or board member for six non-profit organizations and is appointed by Governor Bob McDonnell to Virginia’s homeland security commission. He is a member of the New York, DC and Virginia bars.
Bert Mizusawa is married to the former Yvonne Facchina, who serves as Senior Counsel at the Federal Reserve. They reside in McLean, Virginia with their three sons, Mark, Michael and Eric.
