Museums

CMH provides policy and oversight for the Army museum system; operates former Forces Command (FORSCOM) museums; provides guidance for the collection and maintenance of Army artifacts; manages the Army museum certification program; advises commanders on museum matters; and ensures accountability of all Army historical artifacts.

Histories

CMH staff members research and write the official history of the U.S. Army; provide historical support on issues of current concern to the Army leadership; execute the Army oral history program; and coordinate Army commemoration activities.

Field Programs & Historical Services

CMH provides staff supervision over Army history field operations; directs the U.S. Army program of international military history exchanges; promotes the study and teaching of military history; develops and maintains collections of source materials on Army history; maintains the Rolls of Army; manages the Army-wide Organizational History Program; and oversees CMH Web Site Operations.

Center of Military History

The mission of the Army Center of Military History (CMH) is to formulate and execute the Army Historical Program, which includes the administration of the Army Museum System, to include all Army art and artifact collections; prepare and publish the official history of the U.S. Army and associated historical products needed by the service; formulate historical background and precedent required to develop military plans, policies, doctrine and techniques; collect and preserve historical documents, art and artifacts relating to the U.S. Army; maintain the honors and lineage and historical designation systems that apply to all Army units and organizations; and assist public and private agencies and individuals in matters regarding Army history.
