October 2011 Seminar Series
The National Institutes of Health is pleased to welcome Dr. Augustus A. White, III, as the featured speaker for the NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series on October 13, 2011.
"Of all the forms of inequality," Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "injustice in healthcare is the most shocking and inhumane."Forty-three years after Dr. King's death, health disparities continue to prevail as the most persistent public health challenge in this Nation. According to our speaker, 13 groups of Americans still experience notable health disparities when compared to the general population. These groups include racial/ethnic minorities, women, the obese, the elderly, underprivileged Appalachians, those with disabilities, and others. Some contributing factors, such as biology and access to care, have been well documented, but the effect of physician bias on health disparities has yet to be fully explored. Dr. Augustus A. White, III, will share the extensive research and interviews he conducted with doctors around the country to explore whether subconscious stereotyping of patients influences treatment. The first African American graduate of the Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. White is an internationally recognized spine specialist and one of the preeminent orthopedic surgeons in the world. During five decades in primarily white medical institutions, Dr. White saw first-hand that prejudice can creep into medical care. His presentation will examine how physician bias impacts health disparities, and suggest specific ways to reduce that impact.
