Study of the U.S. Institutes

Students studying in the United States of America.

Study of the United States (U.S.) Institutes are six-week academic programs for multinational groups of university faculty and students from abroad. Institutes are held at university campuses throughout the United States and focus on a particular theme or topic in American studies. Each institute has approximately 18-30 participants from around the world.

The institutes for faculty strengthen curricula and improve the quality of teaching about the United States in academic institutions overseas. Each program includes two components: an intensive, four-week academic seminar and a two-week study tour designed to reinforce the academic content of the seminar.

The institutes for student leaders provide groups of undergraduate student leaders with a deeper understanding of the United States, while simultaneously enhancing their leadership skills.  The institutes consist of a balanced series of seminar discussions, readings, group presentations, and lectures.  Educational travel to other parts of the U.S., local site visits, and volunteer opportunities will complement the coursework and classroom activities.

Cultural activities of all kinds complement the programs and help to increase the participants' understanding of U.S. society.
