Welcome to the Zama American High School Home Page.

Zama High School is a Department of Defense Dependents School (DoDDS) located on Camp Zama Army Base in Zama, Japan. Zama is in the Kanto Plain Region or central area of the main island of Honshu. The weather in the Kanto Plain features four seasons including a mild rainy period in June, but it rarely snows in this area. Fortunately, the fall colors in this area of Japan are stunning and the cherry blossoms that emerge each April are as beautiful as any in the world.

Zama High School presently has an enrollment of about 270 students in grades 9-12. Our school serves Army, Navy and DoD civilian dependents from Camp Zama, NAF-Atsugi, and the Sagamihara Depot and Housing areas.

Our school is staffed by dedicated teachers and support professionals who are committed to total student development through a diverse and high-quality educational experience. The Zama High School master schedule includes myriad course offerings arranged in a block schedule that runs from 0730 to 1430 each school day. Our block schedule includes A and B days: A Day has four classes and B Day has three classes and a seminar period.

Established in 1959, Zama American High School has a rich, proud history of excellence in serving military families. We are accredited by AdvancED with a current status of Accredited Probation. Our most recent accreditation review revealed six areas in need of prompt improvement to retain our accreditation beyond the spring of 2013. The full report is available here.

We have developed a virtual dashboard to document school improvement progress for the AdvancED Accreditation Progress Review scheduled for the Spring of 2012. The dashboard is posted on this web site uder School Improvement.

Our students continue to enjoy all the benefits of a fully accredited school and the faculty, support staff, students and parents are working to make the needed improvements through a continuous school improvement process (CSI). We have made substantial progress since the accreditation review in February 2012 and we are working closely with our district and area offices to ensure we surpass our school improvement goals. Parents and students can rest assured that Zama High School provides a safe, vibrant and high-quality learning environment. We welcome anyone with questions about the accreditation or school improvement process to stop by our campus to learn more about the positive steps we are taking to protect our accreditation. We will gladly share with you our comprehensive improvement plan for a successful accreditation progress review in the spring of 2013. Students and parents are welcome and encouraged to join our six School Communities, each one dedicated to addressing our school improvement goals.

At Zama High School, our focus is on providing students every opportunity to succeed. The faculty is committed to exemplary teaching through engaging lessons, challenging curriculum and personalized instruction. We celebrate and support intellectual curiosity for students seeking to maximize their potential. Our well behaved, multi-talented student body extend their learning beyond the classroom by participating in a wide variety of extracurricular activities including athletics, music, drama and highly-competitive Far East events.
