As you are aware, DoDEA is a tremendous success story and has been recognized in the national media and other forums. DoDEA’s support structure has placed the foundation for every student’s success. Please take time to review our school’s report card on DoDEA’s website and you will find that ZHS students achieve at very high levels. This success is something that we should be proud of since it has been earned by working together. My sincere thanks to all stakeholders involved with the collaborative efforts to make ZHS the best! The combined efforts of the PTO, SAC, commands, parents, community volunteers, staff, faculty and our students are in place to create a powerful learning environment. I look forward to working with you in the success of your most precious resource – your children. It is an honor to serve as your principal in for these two military communities that support high student achievement and a safe learning environment.

Principal Biography

Mr. Bruce Derr served for seven years (2002-2009) as the Superintendent of the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS), Japan School District. Prior to that assignment, he was the assistant superintendent in the Japan District for three years.

A native of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, with both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Education degree from East Stroudsburg State College and a Master of General Administration degree from the University of Maryland, Mr. Derr has held a number of leadership positions in the DoDDS Pacific Area. Previously, he served as the principal of Edgren High School in Misawa, Japan; principal of Kubasaki High School in Okinawa; and principal and assistant principal of Kinnick High School in Yokosuka, Japan. During his tenure as the principal of Kinnick HS, Mr. Derr served as the President of the Kanto Plain Association of Secondary School Principals (KP ASSP). Mr. Derr also served as a teacher and coach at several schools in the Okinawa and Japan Districts and at public schools in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. All totaled, Mr. Derr has 42 years of experience in education; 26 as a school level or district administrator.

During the 1988-89 school year, when Mr. Derr was in his third year as principal, the Department of Education recognized Kinnick High School for Excellence in Education. During that same school year, the National Geographic Society also recognized Kinnick HS for Excellence in Geography Education. During the 1998-99 school year, when Mr. Derr was in his third year as principal of Edgren High School, he was selected as the NASSP/MetLife DoDEA Principal of the Year.

Mr. Derr is married to the former Masako Sano, a native of Fukuoka, Japan.
They have two sons, Michael, a graduate of the University of California at San Diego and Christopher, a graduate of San Diego State University. Mr. Derr is a member of several professional educational organizations including Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) and the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD). He enjoys playing golf, reading, exercising and studying Japanese.
