QUALIFICATIONS
WHO YOU ARE
You're an attorney with strong legal skills who is challenged by the
responsibilities Navy OGC has to offer. You have:
- a strong academic record
- good writing skills
- talent for building client relationships
- curiosity about how you can contribute in Government service
Navy OGC welcomes applications both from
law students and
practicing attorneys.
Law school students seeking a career with OGC typically arrive through OGC's
Advance Commitment Program
and/or Summer Law Clerk
Program.
Each fall, a number of third-year law students choose a career with OGC. These
students, called "advance
commitments," will begin work after they have completed law school, either
before or after taking the bar exam.
Each year, a number of second-year students choose OGC for a summer clerkship.
Our clerks have an opportunity to undertake a variety of projects, and a
highlight of the summer program is a visit to a naval activity, such as a naval
air station or a ship. If you're a summer law clerk in the Washington, D.C.
area, you'll also take part in a Government-wide summer law clerk program where
you'll have an opportunity to join with your peers in visiting other agencies in
Washington, D.C. A number of offers ("advance commitments") are made to
third-year students who have served as
summer law clerks.
Navy OGC recruits each year at law schools and consortiums across the country.
Also, individual OGC offices often recruit through law schools in their region
for local openings. We always
welcome inquiries from students at other schools that we're not able to
visit.
For law school graduates,
Navy OGC recruits for existing vacancies at appropriate levels.
Practicing attorneys
with experience in one of our specialties often bring to us important skills to
meet our needs.
