Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)

Smart Traveler Enrollment Program

The Department of State encourages all American travelers to sign up with their local Embassy or Consulate when planning their travel or after arriving in a foreign country. Signing up helps the Embassy to provide important services for American citizens residing or traveling abroad. Some of these services include:

  • Locating individuals in cases of family or personal emergencies,
  • Relaying important travel and safety information about the region,
  • Arranging evacuation transportation in cases of natural disaster or civil unrest,
  • Issuing replacement passports when originals are lost, and
  • A number of other administrative services relating to personal documentation.

Without the information provided through registration, the Embassy is severely hindered in its ability to provide these services. Many of these services involve emergency situations and time constraints, therefore failure to sign up will almost certainly lead to delays at moments when you can least afford them.

Both short-term visitors and long-term residents, who have already established their U.S. citizenship (i.e. born in the United States, who have been previously issued a passport, consular report of birth, naturalization certificate or certificate of citizenship) can sign up. Signing up registration cannot serve to establish a person’s claim to U.S. citizenship. The principal purpose of such a process is to provide information, which could be useful in providing emergency consular services if need should arise. Full U.S. passport data is required, passport number, date of issuance and place of issuance.

CAUTION   The information you provide will be subject to the privacy act of 1974, as amended, and may not be disclosed by the Department of State to a third party unless 1) You have consented in writing or 2) The disclosure is otherwise authorized by the privacy act, such as pursuant to a routine use. Authorized disclosures may include disclosure to personnel of the Department of State on a need-to-know basis, or to other government agencies having statutory or lawful authority to gain access to such information in the performance of their duties.

You should be aware that electronic transmissions of information over the internet or similar systems may not be secure and may therefore be accessed by unauthorized third parties.
