Starting in 2006, USAID and Kazakhstan broke all development molds to forge a unique joint-financing venture. Now, the Central Asian nation is on its way to becoming a donor and a regional leader in its own right.

When USAID arrived in Kazakhstan in 1992, following the break-up of the Soviet Union, the country’s centrally controlled system lay in ruins.

The U.S. Embassy, harnessing the power of the Youth Theater, spread awareness of critical issues among Tajikistan’s most vulnerable populations. Two recent projects, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Youth Theater for Peace (YTP) and the U.S. Embassy’s Drug Demand Reduction Program, use Youth Theater to help young Tajiks engage their peers on conflict resolution and the dangers of drugs.

The Government of Kazakhstan initiated amendments in the Law on Electric Energy in order to reform the existing electricity market and establish a capacity market. Michael Bekker, who worked 25 years in the US power sector, was a consultant at reforming RAO EEC, and currently, the consultant of JSC KEGOC (Kazakhstan’s system operator) by USAID RESET Project, informed newspaper “K” about the operation of the capacity market in Russia and USA, and present condition of the power sector in Kazakhstan and its specifics.
