Message for U.S. Citizens: Change in Procedure Regarding the Admission of Foreign Travelers into Turkey

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has informed the Consulate of the following new procedure regarding the admission of foreign travelers into Turkey. Beginning January 1, 2013, foreigners will not be allowed to enter the country if their passport does not have enough free space on the pages for Turkish entry and exit stamps.

The Consulate urges U.S. citizens to check their passports and, if necessary, either get additional visa pages added to their passports or apply for a new passport. Further information regarding passport renewal or adding visa pages can be obtained at http://turkey.usembassy.gov/passports.html.

Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens: Protests in Adana

An anti-American protest is scheduled to take place in front of the U.S. Consulate Adana on Sunday, January 13 starting at 12:30 pm. The exact size of the protest is unknown at this time.

The Department of State advises U.S. citizens traveling or residing in Turkey to be alert to the potential for violence, to avoid those areas where disturbances have occurred, and to avoid demonstrations and large gatherings. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. U.S. citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens and nationals traveling to or residing in Turkey enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). U.S. citizens and nationals without Internet access may enroll directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Enrolling signs you up to receive updated information about areas abroad and makes it easier for the U.S. Embassy or Consulate to contact you or your designated contact in case of emergency.
