Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Anti-American Protest in Adana

October 12, 2012

On Saturday, October 13, 2012 an anti-American march and protest is scheduled to take place in downtown Adana.  Approximately 5000 participants are expected to march between 11:00 a.m. and 15:00 p.m. from Sabanci Mosque, down the D-400, to the gates of Incirlik Air Base.  The planned route will pass in front of the U.S. Consulate.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  You should avoid areas of demonstrations, be alert to the potential for violence, avoid those areas where disturbances have occurred, and exercise caution if you find yourself in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens and nationals traveling or residing in Turkey enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).  STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency.  If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with Consulate Adana.

You should regularly monitor the State Department's website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution.  You should also read the Country Specific Information for Turkey.  For additional information, refer to “A Safe Trip Abroad.”

Contact the Consulate Adana for up-to-date information on travel restrictions.  You can also call 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada or 1-202-501-4444 from other countries.  These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).  Follow us on Twitter and Facebook, and download our free Smart Traveler iPhone App to have travel information at your fingertips.
