Reporting Of Birth Abroad

If an U.S. citizen has a child overseas, he or she should report the birth to the Consular Section and apply for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) to a U.S. citizen. For further information on this subject, including forms and fees, please visit the Department of State website.

Please arrive on time for scheduled appointments and complete the relevant application(s) prior to your arrival. Reports of Birth Aboard are done by appointment only. Appointments should only be made in the district where your child was born. Please refer to this Map (PDF 166 KB) to determine which consular district your child was born in and report the birth to the appropriate office. Please schedule your appointment here.

If your child was born in the Abuja Consular district, please schedule an appointment to submit your completed application materials.  After you submit your application, it will be reviewed and we will contact you by email to invite you to schedule an appointment for a formal interview.  In that email, we will request any further documentation that may be necessary to complete the processing of your case.

If your child was born in the Lagos Consular district, please schedule an appointment to submit your application materials. The application will be reviewed and you may be asked to bring in more documentation. In order to avoid the need for more information please bring all of the information listed on this document.

Fees

Fees may be paid in U.S. Dollars or the equivalent in Nigerian Naira, the exchange rate at the Embassy and Consulate General is 165 Naira to one Dollar. No refunds will be issued for denied applications and applicants are responsible for confirming their own eligibility.
