Education and Training

Required Training for all Employees

New Employee ES&H Training -- All employees must complete this ES&H training on their first day of employment at Fermilab. The course covers ergonomics, material safety data sheets (MSDS), Fermilab's lockout tagout procedures (LOTO), personal protective equipment (PPE) and general employee radiation training (GERT).

Sexual Harassment Training -- All employees must complete sexual harassment training. Courses are offered quarterly. The TRAIN database will provide notification when you can sign up.

Other Required Training -- Many individual jobs have other required training courses, including computer workstation reviews or additional ES&H training. Your supervisor will complete an individual training needs assessment (ITNA) and will inform you of the courses that you need to take. If a required course is not offered right away, the TRAIN database will send you an e-mail when a course is available.

Tuition Assistance

Regular full time employees and regular part time employees who work 20 or more hours per week at Fermilab are eligible for tuition assistance. Co-op students are also eligible, but cannot receive advances. The full tuition assistance policy is available on the Office for Professional & Organization Development website. Questions regarding tuition assistance should be directed to training@fnal.gov.

Professional Development

Fermilab's Office for Professional & Organization Development is your resource for all professional development activities at the laboratory. They provide training in technical and professional development and offer a full range of on-site courses, as well as special pricing on off-site computer training courses. Professional Development also manages the tuition assistance program and coordinates the University of Chicago Tuition Remission Program.

The training center has two classrooms. The large classroom can accommodate up to 30 trainees and can be reserved for departmental training sessions. The state of the art computer training facility features 16 workstations that can be configured for the individual needs of each class.
