Education
Education As a former teacher, I am committed to providing our nation’s children with the best possible education. I firmly believe in the original goals of NCLB, but I understand that a “one size fits all” approach to student achievement is not possible. It is time we address the law’s shortcomings and pass meaningful reform legislation. Alaska is not alone in having to face unique challenges as it struggles to educate its children. Each state in this country has geographic, economic, or cultural barriers that prevent its schools from reaching the level of success mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). I find it very troubling that Congress has designated important, nationally authorized education programs as “earmarks” despite their contribution to all states. Programs such as We the People, Reading is Fundamental, Head Start, and Teach for America help many Alaskan students succeed. I will fight to keep important programs like these funded.
