NCI's Scientific Planning & Evaluation Activities

Assessment & Evaluation

NCI’s research program includes numerous initiatives and thousands of active projects to be monitored, tracked, and evaluated. OSPA plays a role in developing and enhancing analytic tools and resources that:

  • Assist NCI staff with portfolio analyses
  • Provide project specific and division level data
  • Monitor research trends

Additionally, OSPA promotes, enhances, and supports program evaluation and evaluation-related activities at NCI by:

  • Providing consultations to NCI staff regarding evaluation activities, training opportunities, and eligibility for NIH Evaluation Set-Aside funding
  • Working with program staff to review and/or edit evaluation documents
  • Assisting program staff in planning, designing, and conducting evaluations
  • Reviewing preliminary evaluation data, advising on potential changes in methodology and reviewing draft evaluation reports and presentations
  • Aiding program staff in developing evaluation Statements of Work (SOWs), identifying contractors, and facilitating communication with contract staff
  • Linking NCI to the NIH evaluation community and the evaluation community at large, to ensure sharing of best practices and lessons learned
  • Coordinating the Trans-NCI Evaluation Special Interest Group (SIG)
  • Coordinating NCI participation in NIH-wide performance reporting activities, such as Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) reporting

These resources and activities enhance the quality of NCI’s programs by providing the technologies and information needed to manage, track, improve, and evaluate progress in achieving goals and objectives.
