Colonel Andrew J. Smith, Commander

Colonel Andrew J. Smith is a native of Helena, Montana. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Biomedical Sciences from Montana State University and a Masters Degree in Information Technology from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Medical Service Corps in 1989 through the ROTC Program where he was recognized as a Distinguished Military Graduate.

His Military education includes: The Army Medical Department (AMEDD) Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Combined Arms Service and Staff School (CAS3), Command and General Staff College (CGSC) and other Army schools including the U.S. Army Airborne School, Ft. Benning, GA.

His Military assignments include: Chief Information Officer positions with Madigan Army Medical Center (Ft. Lewis, WA), the 21st Combat Support Hospital (Baghdad, Iraq), General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital (Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri), and the 62nd Medical Brigade (Ft. Lewis, Washington). He also served as the Automations Officer, 3rd Medical Command (Atlanta, Georgia) and Letterman Army Institute of Research (Presidio of San Francisco, California) as well as an IM/IT Staff Officer at the Office of The Surgeon General (Falls Church, Virginia). Command assignments include Commander, AMEDD Company C, Madigan Army Medical Center (Ft. Lewis, WA) and Troop Commander, General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital (Ft. Leonard Wood, MO). His most recent assignment, before USAMITC, was as the Chief Information Officer for the Western Regional Medical Command. In this capacity, he provided IM/IT policy, procedural guidance, direction and leadership to two 200+ bed tertiary care teaching medical centers, five community hospitals, two health centers and 40+ clinics covering 22 western states.

COL Smith’s Military awards, decorations, badges and certificates include: the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (with five oak leaf clusters), Army Commendation Medal (with two oak leaf clusters ), Army Achievement Medal (with seven oak leaf clusters), Iraq Campaign Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Overseas Service Ribbon, Expert Field Medical Badge, the Army Parachutist Badge and various other service and unit awards.
