Welcome to Our School!

Guiding Philosophy:
I believe in the power of academics in tandem with the other two “A’s”: activities and athletics. Co-curricular experiences provide students a real world laboratory of unique learning opportunities. These valuable junctures can’t be duplicated in the classroom but when they are partnered with classroom experiences, they create a synergy that increases learning. Together these influences provide a full, well-rounded learning process. This balanced approach to education makes students proactive, engaged learners. Students who are active participants in the process will reach greater individual standing along with critical collaboration skills.

Professional Goals:

To paraphrase Dizzy Dean, the legendary baseball player, “It isn’t bragging if you can do it,” and we can do it at Yokota High School! Over the last three years we have steadily improved the curriculum and overall educational environment. This has been accomplished by quadrupling AVID enrollment, adding the strategic language Mandarin Chinese and three AP courses which have resulted in a 50% increase in enrollment in these college-credit courses.  Equally noteworthy, the JROTC program was transitioned from Army to Air Force fostering greater community involvement in the school.  On the horizon at Yokota High School, we will turn our focus to improving student vocabulary and language. The staff, students, parents and community will be involved in the development of school-wide initiatives to enhance students’ reading and writing skills.

Communication Style:
I am always available and look forward to working with all stakeholders. I welcome open dialogue and enjoy those impromptu conversations with parents, community members, educators, and especially students. My mission is to provide the best support possible to those serving our great nation.  This is a cherished responsibility which means I make myself available to those I serve anytime, anywhere.  DoD parents should not have to worry about their child’s safety or education. It is our goal to protect, support, and educate all students. Students who are positively focused, feel safe and secure in their school, and are challenged by individual learning experiences and  opportunities will have the highest chance of reaching their dreams and goals.

Education and Experience:
I hold a BS and MS in Physical Education and Health from Indiana University and an additional 50+ graduate hours in various educational topics. Some of my instructors while at Indiana University included the legendary coaches Bob Knight, Sam Bell, James “Doc” Counsilman and Lee Corso.  This is my 31st year serving our nation’s active duty and DoD civilians in Germany, the Philippines, Korea and Japan.

Fun Facts:
I began coaching at the local Boys Club while an undergraduate. That experience set the stage for my career in education. Paula, my high school sweetheart, and I have been married for thirty-nine years. Our two children were educated in DoDEA schools.

Respectfully,
