Young Artists Competition

The U.S. Coast Guard Band is pleased to announce its seventh annual Young Artists Solo Competition. Auditions will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2013 (snow date: February 10, 2013) at Leamy Concert Hall on the grounds of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. The selected winner will be announced the week after the audition date. A performance by this student in conjunction with the Coast Guard Band’s public concert series will be scheduled for May 12, 2013 at Leamy Concert Hall.

Background

The Young Soloists Competition was established to offer a challenging and rewarding educational experience for Connecticut high school musicians. This program honors the achievements of talented young musicians and increases the visibility of the U.S. Coast Guard Band and Academy among high school band directors and students around the state.

Eligibility

To participate, a student must be attending high school in one of the following Connecticut counties: New London, Middlesex, New Haven, Hartford, Tolland and Windham. Woodwind, brass, and percussion instrumentalists are eligible. Applicants must select one work from the competition repertoire list. We strongly encourage the use of a piano accompanist for the audition.

Applications

Applications, including a letter of recommendation, must be received for screening by the January 25, 2013 deadline. The student then will be contacted concerning acceptance and a scheduled audition time. This is an extraordinary opportunity for talented young musicians and we look forward to your students’ applications.

Current applications are available from our website here. The completed form and a letter of recommendation may be sent to aimee.d.page@uscg.mil, faxed to 860-444-8475, or mailed to:
