Non-Immigrant Visas

A person from another country who wishes to visit the United States must first get a non-immigrant visa in their passport. A non-immigrant visa entitles the holder to travel to the U.S. and apply for admission; it does not guarantee entry to the country. An immigration inspector at the port of entry determines the visa holder's eligibility for admission into the United States.

A non-immigrant visa does not indicate the length of time you may stay in the United States. Rather, your visa shows the time period in which you may seek permission to enter the U.S. and how many times you may apply for entry during that time period. An officer from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) decides how long you may stay in the U.S. at the time of entry. His or her decision is based on the type of visa you hold, the purpose of your entry into the U.S., and the length of time thought necessary to accomplish your purpose.

The following provides visa information for travelers to the United States who wish to visit, work, or study for a temporary period. There are many types of non-immigrant visas. The kind for which you apply will depend on your purpose of travel.

If an emergency has arisen, and you need to request an earlier visa interview appointment, kindly email (consktm@state.gov ) the U.S. Embassy’s Consular Section to request an expedited appointment before applying for a visa. In the email, please explain the reason you are requesting an earlier appointment. Only emergency cases, as determined by the Consular Section, will receive an earlier appointment date.
