American Citizen Services - June 2012 Newsletter (PDF 985KB)

American Citizen Services (ACS) is part of Consular Services, based at the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam. We provide assistance to American citizens residing in or visiting Tanzania, including but not limited to Passport services, Consular Reports of Births Abroad (CRBA), and Notarials. The consulates also assist in emergencies, including deaths, arrests and crisis situations.

Routine passport/citizenship and notarial services are by appointment only; click here to make an appointment. Please click on the options to the left for more information about a particular service.

The U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam can accept payment for consular services in Tanzanian shillings or U.S. dollars. We accept only cash or credit cards; payments must be made onsite in the consular section. Please note that the credit card must be physically present and swiped by the Consular cashier at the cashier window in order for you to pay for consular services.

In case of an emergency, please contact the Embassy at +255-22-229 4000 (022-229 4000 local dialing). We have a 24-hour duty officer who can provide emergency services.

News and Announcements:

- If you are traveling or plan to live in Tanzania and you are a U.S. Citizens, please sign-up with the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam. It helps us assist you in an emergency. It will also allow us to send you e-mail updates about activities in Tanzania and at the Embassy, called "Message to American Citizens ". Please sign-up here and select Tanzania as a country of your destination.

- As of January 3, 2011, all routine U.S. citizen services are conducted by appointment only. Click here to make an appointment. Those services are passport applications, Consular Report of Birth Abroad Certificates (CRBA), additional visa pages, notarials, federal benefits, and immigrant visa petition issues. In true emergency situations (such as deaths in the family, robberies, or emergency medical travel), the Consular Section can expedite appointments.

-Normal processing times of services are as follows:

  • Notarials: completed during the appointment

  • Extra Passport Pages: 24 hrs

  • Emergency Passport: 24 hrs (issued only in the case of a true emergency)

  • Regular Passport: 7-14 business days

  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad: 3 weeks

  • For processing times for all other services, please contact drsacs@state.gov

Questions about visa cases involving non-American citizens may be addressed to drsiv@state.gov (for immigrant visa cases), and drsniv@state.gov (for nonimmigrant visa cases).

U.S. Citizens with Questions about Non-Immigrant Visa Issuance

Consular Section does not have sufficient resources to meet with every interested party who wishes to discuss specific visa cases, and we therefore do not schedule meetings for this purpose. For more information about U.S. visas, please refer to this website.

Parking at the Embassy

The U.S. Embassy in Dar Es Salaam does not provide parking facilities to members of the public seeking consular services. The Embassy strongly recommends that those seeking consular services plan to utilize public parking, arrive by taxi, or use the passenger drop-off point located in front of the consular entrance to the Embassy compound.
