Weekly News: November 5, 2012
- Increased High School Mathematics Graduation Requirements: The new DoDEA memorandum states that beginning with students entering grade 9 in School Year 2012-2013 (this school year’s current 9th graders), students shall be required to earn 4 credits of mathematics along with other stipulations. - ASVAB Testing: The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Test (ASVAB) has just been scheduled for 14 and/or 15 Nov. Signup sheets will be in the counseling office, main office and the JROTC classroom. Preference will be given to seniors and then juniors. We will have 25 seats available for each day. When you sign up please indicate which day you would prefer to take the test—no guarantee. A final test list will be published a week before the test. Students MUST have/know their social security number and have their ID Card with them. Note any seats not taken by seniors and juniors for either day will be offered to sophomores. This is a great aptitude test to see where you stand with your peers in verbal math and science. When you get the results back you also get a book of 400 careers to match your academic skills and interests against. If you are planning to join the military after graduation this test is a must—scores are good for 2 years. Last day to sign up is 7 Nov unless we have reached our seating capacity before then.
- SAHS Football: Please join us for the SAHS Football Awards Banquet at 1800 on Thursday 8 Nov in the MS cafeteria. Family is welcome to attend. Hope to see you there.
- New Student Lock-In: Please see the attached Flyer about the New Student Lock-In! If you’re a new student to SAHS, you are more than welcome to attend!
- Bowling: Did you know bowling offers many scholarship opportunities for our youth? Please see the attached flyer for more information and contact number. Your child can also pick up a flyer in the Counseling office.
- Falcon Journalism: Ten highly qualified students represented SAHS at the Far East Journalism Conference held in Tokyo from Oct. 15-19. While there they attended instructional sessions, went on FAST trips (to cultural areas for their stories and photos, and worked on teams to create newspaper pages, yearbook spreads and a video broadcast.
- SEOUL AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL brings home the first First Place at a Far East this year!
And this is the third consecutive First Place for the Directors’ Award since its inception—Go Falcons!
- Honors Students Outing : On October 25th and 26th, 9th grade Honors students visited the Mayan exhibit at the National History Museum. This exhibit celebrates the 50th anniversary of Korea’s diplomatic relations with both Mexico and Guatemala. The students had a wonderful learning experience.
- Great Works in British Lit Classroom: British Lit A3 /B2: “ By the Pricking of my thumb - something wicked this way comes “ Halloween’s painted frights brings us the first opportunity to explore Shakespeare through his dark dramatic masterpiece MacBeth . As the class reads the play, they will also watch BBC actors recreate the dark worldof court intrigue where evil forces challenge inside the human heart as well as from battle fields. Exploring the psychological realism through the lens of the stage – Shakespeare gives all students a ever deepening understanding of the murky world of ambition and human desire as well as a spine tingling jolt from the theater’s witch - watched world. Corresponding questions and vocabulary for each act are used to enrich and clarify the essential aspects of this units’ study.

- American Lit. – We are studying the Salem witch trials and the power of fear overcoming reason through Arthur Miller’s Modern American tragedy “The Crucible “. The same format of reading the play and watching the play is utilized with corresponding questions and vocabulary to enrich and clarify the essential aspects of the study.
- Engineering Math Class: The Engineering Applications class have been recording data by using probes to measure current and voltage in series and parallel circuits. They use the data to make conjectures about the different characteristics the circuits have and then determine if their conjectures are correct. They have also completed labs on light intensity, resistors, and Ohms law. The intent of the course is to:

- SAHS Men’s Basketball 2012: We encourage all boys grades 9-12 to try-out for this years’ basketball teams. Our try-outs start Monday, Nov. 12 in the Falcon Gym at 1715. Prospective players need a physical and a great attitude!

- FREE Tutoring!: Free tutoring by NHS members happens every Tuesday and Thursday after school in the Information Center. Tuesday is in Room #213 and Thursday is in the library. It is open to ALL SAHS students!

Then the Parent University is just for you! Come and be exposed to instructional strategies that can refresh your memory from when you were in high school. Learning what your child is learning can be beneficial to both of you. During each session, step by step explanations are provided to clarify the concepts and skills taught in the classroom. Interactive online resources are also available for you to explore.
Each session is held in the Information Center (library) located on the 2nd floor of the main building.

- School Transportation Office Closure: The school’s winter break runs from December 24, 2012 – Jan 4, 2013. The school transportation office will be closed from December 24, 2012 – January 2, 2013.
- SAT: The SAT will be given on 1 December 2012. The deadline for signing up has passed. The next SAT date will be 26 January 2013 with a 28 December 2012 signup deadline. Please see attached SAT sheet for details on how to sign-up and complete testing dates.
- ACT: The first ACT will be given on 8 December 2012. The deadline for signing up has passed. The next ACT date will be 9 February 2012 with a 11 January 2012 signup deadline. NO Writing section will be given on 9 February 2012. Please see attached ACT sheet for details on how to sign-up and complete testing dates.
- All students need to sign in and out at main office when arriving or leaving at times other than standard school times.
- No student can leave without parent permission.
- All visitors must sign in and out in the main office and wear a badge while on school grounds.
- All students are expected to attend school daily
- Parents should call school when their child is absent
- Parents should also provide a letter when their child is absent
- Accelerated Withdrawal Date: Accelerated Withdrawal date for 1st semester is 12 December 2012. In order for your child to receive full credit for the semester, he/she must complete accelerated work, must turn in PCS orders for approval ASAP, and must stay in school through 12 December 2012. If a student leaves before this date or is not approved, she/he will receive a withdrawal grade, rather than a final grade, and must finish the semester at the receiving school.
