Assistance for Federal Benefit/Social Security for persons living in Luxembourg is provided by the London Federal Benefits Unit.
 
Federal Benefits includes Social Security, Medicare, Veterans Affairs, Office of Personnel Management and Railroad Retirement.

Social Security Numbers
 
Applications and documentation for Social Security numbers can be submitted to the Consular Section at the U.S. Embassy Luxembourg on Thursdays 8:15 – 11am and 1:30-3pm.  No appointment is necessary.  Your documents will be reviewed, copied and returned to you at the time of your visit.
 
You should review the London Federal Benefits Unit web site section “Social Security Numbers (SSN)”  to ensure you understand the documentation required for the processing of requests for assignment of Social Security numbers, verification of Social Security numbers that have already been assigned and name changes due to marriage, divorce etc.

Overdue/lost/stolen checks:

The Consular Section in Luxembourg will report the non-receipt of a check and if necessary request a replacement check through the FBU in Brussels. 

Changes in payee status:

The Consular Section in Luxembourg will report any changes such as an address change, name change, the death of a payee or of a beneficiary to the FBU in London.

Fees:

No processing fees are charged for services related to federal benefits.
