Ghana is at the forefront of Feed the Future, the U.S. Government’s global hunger and food security initiative. Drawing upon resources and expertise of agencies across the U.S. Government (led by USAID), this Presidential Initiative is helping countries like Ghana transform their own agriculture sectors to grow enough food sustainably to feed their people. Through country-led solutions, Feed the Future aims to address the root causes of hunger and poverty and forge long-term solutions to chronic food insecurity and undernutrition.

Agriculture is the bedrock of the Ghanaian economy, accounting for nearly 30% of GDP. The Government of
Ghana has made food security a national priority, signing its Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development
Program (CAADP) Compact in 2009 and developing a Medium Term Agriculture Sector Investment Plan
(METASIP) to implement the Food and Agriculture Sector Development Policy (FASDEP II) over 2011-2015.
These efforts aim to modernize Ghana’s agricultural sector, transform the Ghanaian economy, and increase
food security and employment opportunities while reducing poverty. Feed the Future directly supports METASIP,
as well as the principles of the CAADP Compact, which was signed by all major stakeholders in the country committed to achieving this vision.

In Ghana, stakeholders in food security span a broad variety of government entities, civil society organizations, private sector companies, and development partners. There is broad consensus that scaling up private sector investment in agriculture, especially in the form of public-private partnerships, can make a significant difference in achieving food security and accelerating agricultural sector growth in Ghana and the West African region as a whole.

In line with METASIP’s priorities, Feed the Future is taking a focused and high-impact approach to transforming Ghana’s major rice, maize, and soya value chains, with particular emphasis on the Northern Region of the country. The initiative is also seeking to improve governance and management of marine fisheries to enhance the food security and livelihoods of coastal fishing communities. Issues such as nutrition, gender, resilience of vulnerable households, and climate-smart resource management are all fully integrated into implementation of Feed the Future in Ghana. Throughout the process, Feed the Future supports the Government of Ghana in improving enabling policies, finding innovative ways to attract private investment, and enhancing the Government’s institutional capacity.
