Educational Programs
AVID
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It also comes from the Latin word avidus, which means "eager for knowledge." It is a college preparatory program for students in the academic "middle." AVID promotes high achievement and improves the quality of a student's educational experience. The curriculum is the same wherever students go and the strategies a student learns in AVID can be used in any academic setting. The AVID class serves as a home base during the school day. Students stay together in the AVID class for their entire time at a particular school.
Counselor
DoDEA's counselors provide a comprehensive guidance program to all students in grades PreK-12th. The school guidance program helps build the foundation for life-long learning by assisting students in developing self-respect, awareness of others and positive learning attitudes. School counselors provide direct and indirect services and activities to students, families, and school staff for developing strategies that deal with education, personal and social challenges that may interfere with the educational process.
Distance Education
The DoDEA Virtual School Program offers distance learning courses and activities to DoDDS and DDESS students around the globe. Students have the opportunity to take courses that are not offered at their local schools. Distance Learning gives students the opportunity to interact with other students around DoDEA and to become proficient in distance learning technologies. Priority for enrollment is given to small schools and to seniors, who need the courses for graduation.

English as a Second Language
DoDEA provides an English as a Second Language (ESL) program for students whose native language is not English. The goal of this program is to develop students' English language abilities so that their academic performance is equivalent to native English-speaking students of the same age and grade level. The program serves both students who are beginning to learn English and those who have developed a high level of oral proficiency, but are performing below grade level in reading and writing because of their limited ability to read and write in English.

Gifted Program
DoDEA provides exemplary educational programs that inspire and prepare all students for success. Gifted students measure their success through the challenges they are able to receive, meet and often surpass. The goal of the DoDEA Gifted Education program is to identify students with high potential and exceptional performance and to offer challenges that match their strengths.

Information Center
The DoDEA Information Center Program focuses on information literacy, the ability to find, evaluate and use information, in order to assist students to become life-long learners. The program combines effective learning and teaching strategies and activities with information access skills. The Information Center Program gives students the opportunity to encounter information in various formats The Information Specialist promotes this student-centered program by working collaboratively with teachers, administrators and others to facilitate student success.

Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps
Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) is designed to teach high school students the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment, while instilling in them self-esteem, teamwork and self-discipline. JROTC prepares high school students for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities and privileges as American citizens. The program is a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school, and it provides instruction and rewarding opportunities that will benefit the student, community and nation.

Special Education
In DoDEA, we embrace the notion that all students will be successful in our schools. Special educators work collaboratively with general educators and share the responsibility for ensuring that students with identified disabilities will meet with success. All students can learn when instruction is geared to their strengths and they are given sufficient opportunity to learn. Special education is specially designed instruction, support, and services provided to students with an identified disability requiring an individually designed instructional program to meet their unique learning needs.
