About the program
The Orlando VA Medical Center pharmacy service coordinates “pharmacy” care with the Daytona Beach and Viera outpatient clinics and the Clermont, Kissimmee, Leesburg and Orange City community based outpatient clinics.
The Orlando VA Medical Center pharmacy served 77,225 veteran patients in 2010, filling over 1.73 million prescriptions.
The medical center’s pharmacy is staffed by pharmacists who are available to serve the needs of our veterans in the main pharmacy and by clinical pharmacists who are located on each primary care team for assistance of the veterans and health care providers on the teams. The medical center's pharmacies are also staffed with highly trained pharmacy technicians who work collaboratively with the pharmacists to deliver pharmacy services.
The pharmacy process begins with
- The health care provider’s entry of a prescription order into the computer system.
- The patient, then, presents to the pharmacy to be seen by a pharmacist who will review the patient’s electronic prescription record and will assist the veteran with his/her medication needs including answering questions that the patient may have.
- Once counseling has been completed, the prescription is filled and checked for accuracy. The process usually takes 30 minutes from the time veteran has seen a pharmacist, but may vary based on workload and time of day that the patient comes to the pharmacy. The busiest time in pharmacy tends to be during the lunch hour.
Services Offered by Pharmacy
1. Refill Service:
All refills will be mailed. Many of these prescriptions are filled by the Consolidated Mailout Pharmacy. Mailing refills allows us to serve the needs of veteran patients with appointments much more quickly.
Refills may be ordered by phone, internet or by filling out a refill request form. Refill request forms may be mailed to the address found on the sheet that is included with your prescription.
Automated refill line
An automated refill line is available for all Orlando VAMC patients. After you have dialed the number, wait for the automated attendant to answer and follow the instructions.
If you are using the automated refill line, all refills should be ordered at least 10 days prior to when the refill is needed to make certain that you get your refill in the mail on time.
Internet refill
Prescriptions may also be filled online using VA's My HealtheVet program. When you log on to the website, you will need to create your personal profile to be able to use this service.
2. Drug information/patient education
Please visit My HealtheVet for information about any prescription you may be taking. You may also visit any of our pharmacists in the main pharmacy or in the primary care teams for information regarding any of your medications (VA and Non-VA). Additionally, our clinical pharmacists teach at each of the following patient education classes: diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking cessation, healthy heart, MOVE (weight loss) and lung disease.
3. Anticoagulation:
Clinical Pharmacists run this clinic which includes monitoring and follow-up of veterans on anticoagulants such as warfarin.
4. Disease state management
Clinical pharmacists assist providers in disease state management of veterans with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, anemia (The ESA clinic), renal disease, hepatitis C, smoking cessation and chronic pain.
5. Traveling Veterans Clinic
This clinic is located on the Green team in the Orlando VA Medical Center, Baldwin Park Campus to assist veterans visiting our area with their short term prescriptions needs. Some patients may be required to be seen by a VA physician or have lab tests performed prior to issuance of prescriptions.
