Security Message for U.S. Citizens

This is a Security Message for U.S. citizens in Eritrea.  The U.S. Embassy has been made aware of increased military presence in some sections of Asmara.  Employees of the U.S. government have been advised to limit their movements within the city, avoid large gatherings, and exercise caution.  We strongly recommend that private U.S. citizens do likewise.

U.S. citizens are urged to contact the American Citizens Services unit of the Embassy for advice or assistance.  The unit can be reached, 24 hours a day, at (+291) 1-12-0004 or by email at consularasmara@state.gov

U.S. citizens residing or traveling in Eritrea are encouraged to enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and to update their contact information online or at the U.S. Embassy in Asmara.  Enrollment in STEP may be done well in advance of travel.  For more information on STEP or to enroll, please visit the Department of State’s Consular Affairs website:  https://travelregistration.state.gov.  We also encourage you to download our free iPhone App, Smart Traveler.  The app allows you to enroll in STEP and to review information on countries around the world.  The U.S. Embassy’s website is http://eritrea.usembassy.gov/.   U.S. citizens should also consult the Country Specific Information for Eritrea and the Travel Alert for Eritrea at the Department’s website: http://travel.state.gov.  The same information is available in the iPhone Application.
