Liturgical Vigilantes

When one thinks of notorious vigilantes, several names and personality types come to mind. Perhaps Charles Bronson or Dirty Harry, or maybe even the Dark Knight, Batman. But personally, I have yet to run into tragic costumed figure or a rogue cop who has just had enough.

But I have met a person who has had enough and can’t take it anymore, a person who has seen too much lawbreaking simply ignored by the competent authorities, a person who has finally decided to do something about it—to become a vigilante—Mrs. McGillicuddy. She sits in the third pew on the left.

As general rule, vigilantes are not born, they are made. Their steely resolve to right the wrong, forged in the fires of un-rectified lawlessness, transforms them into self appointed guardians of the good. They become—watchmen.

The Mrs. McGillicuddys of the world have had much to endure these last forty years. They sit in their pews and watch as liturgical experimentation and improvisation transform the holy mass into a vehicle of self expression for those who do not understand what it truly expresses. They sit and wonder, when will somebody do something about this? When? When they finally reach the reluctant conclusion of never, what follows results in either resignation or transformation.

Now a confession, I’m a Mrs. McGillicuddy. But I don’t want to be.

Some years ago, I bought a new house. In preparation for the move of my family, I excitedly went to mass at my soon-to-be parish home. I was floored. The holy Mass seemed almost unrecognizable. I actually checked the sign on the way out to make sure it said Roman Catholic, just in case I had accidentally wandered into some other strange denomination’s environs. No such luck, it said Catholic.

Folks, let me be clear here. There’s your run of the mill liturgical abuse and then there is this place. At my geographical parish, I imagine they must have traveled far and wide to discover each and every variation of liturgical abuse, only to bring all them home resulting in a synthesis of all liturgical abuse, a Noah’s Ark of liturgical abuse if you will. It was that day that I first transformed from mild-mannered Patrick into Mrs. McGillicuddy—Liturgical Watchman.

I resolved to call the diocese. I got the Director of Worship on the phone. I said, “I want to report some liturgical abuse.” I never knew this before, but you can actually hear eye-rolling over the phone. I am sometimes surprised that an epidemic of blindness does not plague diocesan liturgical directors, for all the eye-rolling they must do.

But I didn’t get angry or emotional. I simply recited the litany of liturgical abuses I witnessed. At first, the Director tried to defend this or that practice, but eventually the list was too overwhelming and specific for him to continue. Then his tone changed and the audible eye-rolling ceased. I knew then, I knew that he knew. His tone was not of a watchman, but that of the resigned.

He kindly told me that his brother lived in the same area and refused to go to that parish because it was so bad. You will be much happier if you join this other parish a few miles away, he told me.

We did, and we have been happy. But the question lingers, why should I have to?

In the years since, even at my happy parish, I had occasion to call my now former pastor due to an abuse that I could not ignore by a regularly visiting priest. (Ad libbing and impromptu ten-minute sermons during the Eucharistic prayers.) It happened time and time again. “This is wrong,” I thought. “Seriously wrong,” I have to say something.

I didn’t want to be that guy, but I had to be. I politely spoke to the priest in question after mass, but he just laughed at me. I don’t want to be that guy, truly. Why should I have to be? But I couldn’t let it go. So I called the rectory and left message after message. The pastor never called me back, not once.

Father John Zuhlsdorf regularly posts on his popular blog about the proper etiquette of reporting liturgical abuse, noting correctly that further bad behavior won’t help the situation. When reporting liturgical abuse, I advise following his very sage advice.

But, for me, it always comes back to this question. Why should I have to?

Here at AlwaysCatholic we tend to agree with Father Z when considering opinions about any of our Presidents’ from non-Americans. In this case, Dr. Oddie opines from a Catholic viewpoint and therefore “all is up for grabs” as far as we are concerned here at ACBlog.

We could have printed Dr. Oddie’s story directly from The Herald (It’s THAT good and we were sooo happy that someone has addressed the Anti-Catholic issue and Barack Obama) but we chose to run it from WDTPRS.com because of Father Z’s spot on observations.

I generally dismiss transatlantic views of any POTUS. This commentary, however, caught my attention because it concerns the President and the Catholic Church. He also quotes at length from Archbp. Nienstedt of St. Paul and Minneapolis, my native place.

Is Barack Obama the most anti-Catholic American president in living memory?

I don’t mean, of course, that he has openly attacked the Church (though it was noted that, at his inauguration as president, contrary to normal practice there was among the clergy invited to attend not one single Catholic, though he made a point of inviting the controversial — because openly and actively homosexual — Episcopalian (i.e. Anglican) bishop, Gene Robinson). [A good observation. And now Pres. Obama has directed his administration not to defend federal law regarding marriage. Interesting. No? Pres. Obama considers DOMA unconstitutional.]

What I mean, though, is that across the whole spectrum of contemporary moral issues, he is passionately committed to a series of views which run directly contrary to those of the Church. All this has caused at least one Catholic bishop (there are probably others) to call him anti-Catholic.

As a Senator, [which wasn't all that long] he supported sex education, to be provided by Planned Parenthood, to children of five years old. He consistently voted for abortion, including partial birth abortion. He voted (twice) against Bills prohibiting public funding of abortions ; he voted in favour of expanding embryonic stem cell research; he voted against notifying parents of minors who had undergone out-of-state abortions; he voted for a proposal to vote $100,000,000 for the funding of sex-education and contraceptives (including abortifacients) for teenagers; he opposed the “Born Alive Infants Protection Act” on the Senate floor and in 2003 killed the bill in committee. [Consistent with what he did when still in Illinois.] This would have outlawed “live birth abortion,” where labor is induced and an infant is delivered prematurely and then allowed to die.

Pro-Life NYC Billboard on Black Abortion Rate Taken Down

Pro-abortion activists in New York City have forced the removal of a pro-life billboard that warned about the inordinately high abortion rates on African-American women and children.

The pro-life group Life Always paid for the billboard, to try to draw attention to the fact that abortions kill 300,000 black unborn children annually. In fact, new data put out by the CDC today indicates black babies are victims of abortions at a much higher rate than their white or Hispanic counterparts.

The billboard, located in SoHo, bears an image of a young black girl and says “The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb.”

But the outdoor advertising company that sold the space to the pro-life group for the billboard said on Thursday that it would remove the image because the employees at the Mexican restaurant located on the bottom floor of the several story building bearing the ad were facing harassment over its pro-life message.

“It’s down, or at least it should be coming down soon,” Peter Costanza, the general manager for Lamar Advertising, told the New York Times. “Why did I take it down? Yesterday, somebody came into the restaurant harassing the waiters and waitresses. I don’t want any violence to happen around the buildings there.”

Yet, a woman answering the phone at Lupe’s East L.A. Kitchen could not verify to the Times that any harassment had been taking place.

Costanza said the decision to remove the billboard “wasn’t about politics” even though several black activists in the city spoke out against it.

The pro-life group told LifeNews.com it disagrees with Lamar’s decision to remove the billboard.

“Life Always strongly disagrees with Lamar Outdoor’s decision to remove the billboard in Soho, but the billboard’s message holds true, and truth has a place in the public square,” it said. “The intent of the board is to call attention to the tragedy and the truth that abortion is outpacing life in the black community.”

Pastor Stephen Broden, a member of the group’s board of directors, added: “The reaction to this billboard is centered on trauma; abortion is traumatic, it is the emotional and physical trauma that women face after abortion that necessitates access to post-abortive healing services.”

And Rev. Michel Faulkner of New York responded, “While this billboard causes a visceral reaction from many African Americans, it addresses a stubborn truth that 60 percent of black babies do not make it out of the womb. We must do something now.”

“Instead of challenging the design of the ad, we should ask why the message is true and how can we change the fact that the leading cause of death for African Americans is abortion,” Faulkner said.

Before the Lamar decision, Letitia James, a City Council member who represents parts of Brooklyn, was outraged by the pro-life billboard and worked with the pro-abortion, liberal activist group MoveOn to post a petition campaign against it. James had planned to hold a news conference with Al Sharpton on Friday at the billboard had Lamar not decided to take it down.

“The billboard was offensive, especially during Black History Month, and I had intended to hold a press conference Friday in front of the billboard to protest the message of racial profiling and against a woman”s right to choose,” Sharpton said Thursday.

Also, Women of Color Policy Network, a research and policy institute at New York University, wrote a letter to Costanza and told the newspaper he assured the group the billboard would be removed. And Joan Malin, the president of Planned Parenthood of New York City, applauded Lamar’s decision, saying the abortion business was “pleased that Lamar Advertising has heard the voices of thousands of New Yorkers.”

Meanwhile, the mother of the young girl who appears in the ad is upset that her daughter’s image is associated with it. Tricia Fraser said her daughter signed a contract to become a stock image model knowing that her image could be used in any number of campaigns with which she or her daughter might disagree.

“I would never endorse something like that,” the mother of 6-year-old Anissa Fraser told Fox television today.

Before Lamar’s decision, a representative of Life Always, Marissa Gabrysch, said: “There’s a grave disparity and just a huge disproportion that African-Americans represent 13 percent of the U.S. population yet represent 36 percent of abortions in the United States. African-Americans are claimed in abortions twice as frequently as they lose their lives to violent crimes, AIDS, cancer, heart disease and motor vehicle accidents combined.”

Life Always board member Pastor Stephen Broden told the Catholic News Agency: “During Black History Month, we celebrate our history, but our future is in jeopardy as a genocidal plot is carried out through abortion. We have seen the heartbreaking effects of opportunists who happen to be black abortionists perpetrating this atrocity; it’s not just babies who are in danger, it’s also their mothers, and our society at large.”

Rev. Derek McCoy, another Life Always board member, added: “This campaign highlights the tragedy that abortion is the number one killer since 1973 in the black community and the truth that we must confront in a city with a near 60 percent abortion rate for black women.”

The billboard is similar to a campaign Heroic Media ran in Jacksonville, Florida and Austin Texas last year, that Life Always took over in January.

The billboard follows a December city health department report showing 41 percent of pregnancies in New York City ended in abortion in 2009. Blacks had the highest number of abortions with 40,798, the report indicated. [Emphasis added by AlwaysCatholic editor]

Okay, okay, so I expect Planned Parenthood to say and do stupid things. I certainly expect for the “Reverend” Al Sharpton to bring up racial profiling no matter what the case (racial profiling concerning abortions of black children by black mothers? ) Pretzel logic at it’s Sharpton finest… BUT…

I do not expect the Archbishop of NYC, Timothy Dolan to sit by quietly after his remarks concerning NYC abortion statistics back in January were publicized locally and nationally. I do not expect Archbishop Dolan to stop at those remarks, I expect him to respond to the billboard controversy…Why?

Archbishop Dolan was appointed to one of the top Archdioceses in the country. Some would say the the NYC Archdiocese is perhaps THE most important as a pulpit simply because NY is the Number one share in the TV/Radio media market. So why do I expect him (and his Secretary & Press Office) to be on top of this story? Archbishop Dolan doesn’t have the luxury of showing up smiling and performing for the media with his ebullient personality. He has the responsibility to uphold the supreme law of the Church which is to save souls.

Black children died in the womb between January 9 and February 23, 2011 and where was the Shepherd of his flock in NYC? Well, on January 9th he was here:

February 23, 2011, when the billboard made the news and February 24, 2011 when it was forced to be taken down by pro-abortion supporters, where was Archbishop Dolan? I don’t know do you? Maybe he was being interviewed on “Fox & Friends” again when he obviously forgot he was the President of United State Catholic Conference of Bishops. Remember, he IS a Roman Catholic priest not a layman who teaches a class on Comparative Religions. Take a look at this interview by the leader of our Bishops in America…

Now, I say again, WHERE WERE YOU ARCHBISHOP DOLAN? This is not a popularity contest and you are not a Page Six celebrity (Page Six for those who don;t know is the celebrity gossip column of the NY Post) ! Get over yourself, please and remember this…how many black babies died between your little presser on January 9th and yesterday, February 24th?

How would you know? The cameras weren’t there yesterday and neither were you.

The New Age Movement Is Incompatible with Sound Christian Doctrine and Practice

Despite the secularism of our age – or perhaps, because of it – many people are rediscovering an interest in spirituality. One can go to almost any commercial bookstore and discover whole sections devoted to the theme.

Unfortunately, most of what sells as “spiritual reading,” usually classified under the heading of “New Age,” does not demand any more faith or belief than going to the movies. Not all that is marketed under the rubric “spirituality” is “chicken soup” for the Christian soul. Indeed, much of it, if consumed indiscriminately or unwarily, could prove poisonous to the life of faith. While New Age writings may seductively appeal to the legitimate longing of human nature, they are fundamentally opposed to Christian revelation.

Spirituality in our Catholic tradition is more than just narcissistic navel gazing. It is not a self-absorbed seeking after self-fulfillment found through esoteric teachings or practices. Christianity’s invitation is to look outwardly and beyond – to a “New Advent” of the God who calls us to a dialogue of love, a dialogue which invites us to conversion and submission to his will.
Authentic spirituality for the Christian is not so much about our search for God but God’s search for us. Spiritual life is a relationship with the Triune God entered into through our participation in Christ’s passion, death and resurrection through baptism and the living of a life of discipleship. This personal relationship with God grows through his free gift of grace and sheds light on our relationship to our fellow men and women and indeed on our relationship to the world.

Great news: Chicago elects Rahm Emanuel mayor for life

Per the Daley dynasty, Chitown seems to love ruthless, larger-than-life, politically hyperconnected Democrats as mayor. Based on that job description, maybe the only guy in America who could have beaten Rahm is Bill Clinton.

CNN says it’s all over, but the Tribune’s being scrupulously cautious at the moment:

With 81 percent of precincts counted, Emanuel had 54.9 percent to 24.5 percent for Gery Chico.

Emanuel is trying to score more than 50 percent to avoid a runoff election on April 5.

City Clerk Miguel del Valle had 9.4 percent and former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun was at 8.7 percent…

Despite a tremendous amount of attention on the mayor’s race and a slew of hotly-contested aldermanic races, election officials say turnout could be as low as 40 percent. That’s far less than the 50 percent turnout officials were hoping for on Monday.

Last month, before he was temporarily thrown off the ballot by an appellate court ruling, he was polling at just 44 percent. A few days later, the Illinois Supreme Court handed him a 7-0 victory and all the triumphant free PR that comes with it. Tonight, not only will he avoid the runoff by clearing 50 percent, he might well clear 55. Fantastic.

Exit question: Am I mistaken or did Obama decline to campaign for Rahm in the mayoral race? For most presidents that would be a simple judgment call about not using the power of the office to meddle in local affairs, but of course we know by now that that’s no obstacle to The One.
