  • ISU looks to complete a successful Hawaiian trip

No matter which teams Indiana State played in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, the Sycamores knew they were in for a grind.
Three games in four days is a grind for any team.
Added to that was the advanced degree of difficulty ISU set itself up for when it beat Mississippi 87-85 in the opening round on Saturday. That meant ISU had the chance to face No. 18 San Diego State in a semifinal. The Sycamores fought tooth and nail with the talented Aztecs before they fell 62-55.

Indiana State (8-2) finishes the home portion of its nonconference schedule at 6-0, its first unbeaten home record outside of the Missouri Valley Conference since the 2006-07 season (3-0). • SPT121812ISUWBB valley.jpg Deflections playing big part in ISU success

One of the principal ways coach Teri Moren and her assistants assess their team’s effectiveness in a game is not one that the casual fan would track.
The Indiana State women’s basketball staff wants to know how many times the ball is deflected when the Sycamores are playing defense.
“Part of the information we give them in timeouts is how many deflections they have, and then at halftime we talk about it again,” Moren said recently. “We want 30 deflections. Taylor [Whitley] had a game with 15. Natasha [Zurek] had a game with nine at halftime, which is tremendous. Those are things that get our kids excited, gives them something to think about and they take a lot of pride in.”
Whitley, ISU’s lone senior, is among the many Sycamores translating those into steals. She leads all Missouri Valley Conference players with 30 steals and 3.3 per game.

College basketball games are rarely decided during shootaround, but when Indiana State’s men’s team came out lackadaisical in its pregame routine, coach Greg Lansing saw the warning signs.
He ended the session early in an effort to get the team focused. Once the Sycamores faced IUPUI in the real thing, it seemed that Lansing’s decision had the desired effect.
