Alaska is going rogue on climate change.

Defiant as ever, the state that gave rise to Sarah Palin is bucking the mainstream yet again: While global temperatures surge hotter and the ice-cap crumbles, the nation’s icebox is getting even icier.

That may not be news to Alaskans coping with another round of 50-below during the coldest winter in two decades, or to the mariners locked out of the Bering Sea this spring by record ice growth.

‘Journal News’ hires armed security guards – POLITICO.com

The Journal News of West Nyack, N.Y., has hired armed security guards to defend its offices after receiving a torrent of phone calls and emails responding to the paper’s publication of the names and addresses of area residents with pistol permits.

RGA Investigations, a private security company, “is doing private security at on location at the Journal News as a result of the negative response to the article,” according to a police report first obtained by the Rockland County Times (Nanuet, N.Y.) and shared with POLITICO. The guards “are armed and will be on site during business hours through at least January 2, 2013.”

Yes, resistance should have begun right there, at the moment of the arrest itself. But it did not begin.

Well, I think the legislation doesn’t ban existing ones but — although I would like to do that, too, but I think the legislation we’re talking about would prohibit the sale and probably manufacturer sale of high-capacity clips in the future, not those that are in private possession today.
But let me say, yes. One of the definitions of a nation state is that the state has a monopoly on legitimate violence. And the state ought to have a monopoly on legitimate violence. If the premise of your question is that people are going to resist a tyrannical government by shooting machine guns at American troops, that’s insane.

As ‘Fiscal Cliff’ Draws Near, Obama Leaves Negotiations to… Biden.

The Hill reported yesterday: “McConnell has begun talking with Vice President Biden in an effort to ‘jump-start’ the negotiations.” President Obama has adopted to remain out of the talks and supposedly above the fray.

The last-ditch effort between Biden-McConnell talks reportedly began Sunday evening, after McConnell and Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) failed to reach agreement on core issues.

This is not the first time that Obama has delegated core responsibility to his deputy. He did so, most recently, on gun control efforts. He has also done so on the issue of helping the middle class and monitoring stimulus funds.

To Howard Kurtz & Co., it’s “obvious” that Gregory didn’t intend to commit a crime. But, in a land choked with laws, “obviousness” is one of the first casualties — and “obviously” innocent citizens have their “obviously” well-intentioned actions criminalized every minute of the day. Not far away from David Gregory, across the Virginia border, eleven-year-old Skylar Capo made the mistake of rescuing a woodpecker from the jaws of a cat and nursing him back to health for a couple of days. For her pains, a federal Fish & Wildlife gauleiter accompanied by state troopers descended on her house, charged her with illegal transportation of a protected species, issued her a $535 fine, and made her cry. Why is it so “obvious” that David Gregory deserves to be treated more leniently than a sixth grader? Because he’s got a TV show and she hasn’t?
