    AER has provided more than $1.2 billion in assistance to Soldiers and their Family members during emergency situations. The formula is the annual AER campaign to gather contributions for replenishing AER funds. Army Community Service kicked off this year's campaign March 2, with an 8 a.m. breakfast at the Fort Bragg Club. The campaign is expected to run through May 15, with the theme of "Helping Maintain Army Strong."

After Army garrisons selected their best entries, 664 Division I and 1,031 Division II photographs were forwarded for Department of the Army judging.

    FORT McCOY, Wis. -- In addition to pay for their duty in uniform, Soldiers earn a long list of financial, health-care and other benefits that enhance their quality of life. But some of those earned benefits go unclaimed, according to Kevin Herman, Mobilization/Deployment program manager at Fort McCoy's Army Community Service (ACS) Center. Herman equated the situation with an employer laying several $100 bills on a table in front of a Soldier, telling the Soldier this is what they earned. "Does the Soldier pick up the money and take it with them, or do they leave it on the table'" "Many Soldiers leave it on the table," Herman said. "They leave a lot of money (benefits) unclaimed." Soldiers can learn more about their benefits at either of two presentations Thursday, March 17 at the 88th Regional Support Command Headquarters auditorium, building 60.

Kevin Herman, the installation's Army Community Service (ACS) AFAP program manager, attended as an FRTI (Facilitators, Recorders, Transcribers, and Issue support staff) and helped facilitate the processes of his assigned group. Laurene "Susie" Krueger of the Fort McCoy Network Enterprise Center represented the installation as a delegate to the conference. Krueger also served as a delegate for the Fort McCoy AFAP conference during the past several years. "Attending the Army-level conference gave me a firsthand look at the entire process from the lowest level to mid level to the Army level," Herman said. "Our voice is just as important as those from other installations, and our concerns are equally heard."

Daryl Budda, the director of the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Directorate, was honored during the fiscal year (FY) 2010 competition for his innovations and contributions to the recreation program and his efforts to enhance community life. Budda, who has more than 29 years of service in the recreational field, has been at Fort McCoy since 1998. The award is presented to an employee who best exemplifies superior achievement as an Army community recreation professional. "This award reflects an entire team effort," Budda said. "The Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation team at Fort McCoy has a very positive attitude and is committed to serving Soldiers and Families."

    A record-setting crowd of nearly 800 participated in the fifth annual Winter Extravaganza, held Jan. 29 at Fort McCoy's Whitetail Ridge Ski Area. The participants took advantage of many discounted events. A majority of the attendees - 502 people - found their way to the snowtubing slopes during the event's 11-hour schedule. Winter Extravaganza supports both the Army Family and Community Covenants, said Jobi Spolum, Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Marketing director. The event helps to bring Families together and strengthen their ties in support of the Army Family Covenant, she said. Whitetail Ridge is open to the public, and events such as Winter Extravaganza help strengthen the relationship between Fort McCoy and the surrounding communities in support of the Army Community Covenant, Spolum said. Commercial sponsors helped support and defray the cost of the event, she added.

    FORT McCOY, Wis. -- When Soldiers step into the piano room at the Fort McCoy Community Activity Center (CAC), they step into a different world. Michelle Jones, a chief operator at the installation's telecommunications center who teaches piano and drum-set lessons at the CAC, said Soldiers need an outlet, a stress reliever, and the piano is one way to achieve that. Jones, who has been at the telecommunications center 22 years and teaching piano at the CAC five years, tells her "favorite story" to illustrate the positive impact of music. "A mobilized Soldier stationed at Fort McCoy came into the CAC and said he needed an outlet," Jones said. "He said all he could hear was 'war' ... 'war' ... 'war.' He had come to the activity center to play pool, and he saw a sign noting the availability of piano lessons. He came to see me, though he had never touched a piano before. He began taking piano lessons in January." His goal was to be able to play traditional Christmas music for his family when he went on leave in December. "He wanted the whole thing to be a secret," Jones said. "When he went home that Christmas, he floored everyone." "There was nothing like it when he was playing 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' in July," Jones said. "That's my best story."

    The Fort Bragg Recycling Incentives Program was launched in March of 2008 as a way for military units and agencies across the installation to reduce waste and recycle post commodities. Participants in the program collect and donate cardboard, office paper, aluminum cans and plastic bottles to the Fort Bragg Recycling Center where the materials are weighed and recorded. The recorded weights are then transferred into a value and the amount is issued to the donating unit or organization as a voucher that may be applied at any FMWR resource.
