Effective fall term 2012, in addition to the university admission requirements, students wishing to major in any program in the College of Visual Arts and Design must meet minimum academic requirements to be classified as a pre-major. Admission to the college through this process does not guarantee acceptance into your chosen major as several programs have entry reviews and all have midpoint reviews that must be passed in order to complete the program. Incoming UNT Graduate Student Scholarships
New MFA and Ph.D. students may be eligible to receive $1,000 Academic Achievement Scholarships for their first year of study. This award qualifies a student for in-state tuition rates and is renewable for a second year if the student makes satisfactory progress in his/her program during the first year. Contact the Graduate School for further details.
The College of Visual Arts and Design offers thirteen tuition-waiver fellowships for students enrolled in terminal degree programs (PhD and MFA). These fellowships are supplemented by teaching assistantships or teaching fellowships.Consult the department office for more information about these or other awards.
Pre-Major
Beginning Fall semester 2010, a student who intends to pursue a degree in Studio Art including concentrations in Ceramics, Drawing and Painting, Fibers, Metals and Jewelry, New Media, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture or Watercolor will be classified as a Studio Art Pre-Major when admitted to the University. In order to achieve major status the student must complete at least 30 hours of college courses (including the following) and:
- Complete ART 1200, 1440, 1450, 1500, 1510; ART 2350 and 2360 with a grade of C or better;
- Complete the 2000-level courses in the ASTU concentration of your choice with a grade of B or higher (for Printmaking majors, the beginning ASTU course is a 3000-level);
- Have at least a 2.5 GPA on the required Art courses;
- Have a minimum 2.0 UNT grade point average;
- Photography and Watercolor also require selection through entry portfolio
After successfully meeting these requirements a degree plan will be processed converting the student to Studio Art major status in the concentration of their choice.
Programs of Study
The Department of Studio Art offers a BFA degree with nine concentrations to choose from and an MFA in Studio Arts with nine concentrations to choose from. Select an area of study from the list below to learn more about its curriculum, faculty, and application procedure.
The deadline for application for most of our graduate concentrations is February 1 for fall admission and October 1 for spring admission. For more information on how to apply for the MFA in Studio Art, contact us or read the application instructions.

Degree Plans for Studio Art Programs
When you have completed the requirements for Major status the degree plan form must be processed through faculty advising. Faculty will undertake degree plan advising during established courses in your program. Click here for the degree plan form, print double sided.
