U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky was re-elected as Senate minority leader on Wednesday.

McConnell, whose caucus lost seats to the Democratic majority on Nov. 6, will have a fourth term as leader of Senate Republicans.

McConnell was nominated for the top spot by Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.

In a statement released by McConnell's office, the Louisville native said an "energized" Republican leadership is committed to finding solutions to the country's problems.

"I am honored that my colleagues once again supported me and invested their trust in me to lead the team as Republican leader for another two years," McConnell said.

McConnell is the second Kentuckian to be chosen as the leader of his party in the Senate. The first was Democratic Sen. Alben Barkley, who served as Senate majority leader and was later vice president under President Harry Truman.

McConnell was first elected leader of Senate Republicans in 2006. He is Kentucky's longest-serving senator and is up for re-election in 2014.
