  • Vets observe 70 years of history

    Veterans, part of the 317th Troop Carrier Group, came out to Fort Benning Friday to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the unit, which started in 1942, during World War II. More than 100 veterans and their spouses attended the Heritage Flight and Troop Drop event, where they watched the World War II Airborne Demonstration Team drop from a World War II C-47 Transport Aircraft used by the 317th. The demonstration team wore vintage paratrooper uniforms.

    Twenty four of the Army's Soldiers began the second day of 2012 Best Warrior Competition with a written examination, followed by a day land navigation event, uniform preparation and night urban orienteering. The day navigation event was arguably the highlight of the day. Soldiers were required to use a compass, map and protractor in locating five points within a three-hour period. The traditional land navigation event has not been included in Best Warrior since 2008.

    Some people find balancing a checkbook a challenge. Imagine balancing a $3.3 billion budget that resources the Army's largest command, with units stationed across the United States. That's exactly what U.S. Army Forces Command's budget and accounting team was charged with doing during fiscal year-end operations on Sept. 30. Several members of the team were recognized recently for their efforts. "We like to say year-end close out starts on 1 October," said Murray Pittman, Deputy Budget Officer for FORSCOM G8. "The results achieved on 30 September of this year reflect the team's cumulative efforts since 1 October of last year."

Meals ready-to-eat, better known as MREs, are what many Soldiers are used to when in the field, but the leadership of the 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, "Task Force Wings," know it takes more than that to keep the mission going. "If you take care of your Soldiers, they will take care of you," said Chaplain (Capt.) Tim Raburn, the chaplain for TF Wings.

    A Hispanic Heritage Month celebration took place at the Warrior Community Center Sept. 28. The theme of the month-long observance, which runs from Sept. 15-Oct. 15, is "Diversity United, Building American's Future Today." The event was filled with the color, tradition, art and sound of a variety of Hispanic cultures from Panama, Peru and Puerto Rico to Brazil, Mexico and beyond. Samples of clothing, artwork, instruments, food and more were displayed as attendees walked into the WCC banquet hall, while music and dance were woven into the tapestry of the program.

They must successfully assess whether the downed AH-1 Cobra helicopter needs to be repaired on site or slingloaded back to Gorgas Army Airfield for intensive repairs.

(Oct. 9, 2012) -- Mortars hit Gorgas Army Airfield, as a field training exercise at the Joint Readiness Training Center near Fort Polk, La., Oct. 8, causing the number of casualties to exceed the hospital's capabilities to provide immediate medical care. Soldiers made a high-speed sprint to the closest place for adequate cover; when the "All Clear" sounded, all first responders and all participating parties helped to get the wounded personnel to immediate care.

    As dusk approached on Sept. 24 on Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, a C-17 Globemaster III arrived to load two UH-60 Black Hawk MEDEVAC helicopters for movement in support of the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade. The Black Hawks were brought to Kandahar by C-5 Galaxies which are capable of carrying four UH-60s each. Moving rotary-wing aircraft on fixed-wing assets provide advantages such as longer range and the ability to transport multiple helicopters with the use of only one crew, which effectively saves money and increases safety.

    Fort Huachuca, AZ. - As part of the Army's September's National Suicide Prevention month, Fort Huachuca's Army Substance Abuse Program held a installation wide event, Stand Down Day for Suicide Prevention on Sept. 27. The discussions were mandatory and were held at three different locations and times throughout the day, giving the more than 6,000 attendees a chance to participate. The lectures were held at Cochise Theater, Murr Community Center and Eifler Fitness Center.
