April 23-25, 2012 with

Applications must be postmarked by February 3, 2012. Applicants should include a completed application form and a DVD to include two contrasting styles of conducting/repertoire. Graduate students with teaching experience and new university assistant professors are strongly encouraged to apply. Four participants will be selected to conduct on the workshop and two will be selected as alternates. Alternates will have the opportunity to conduct in rehearsal but will not perform on the concert. Auditors may attend but will not receive conducting time with the band.

During the first days of the workshop (April 23-25) each participant and alternate will rehearse the West Point Concert Band and receive coaching from both Mr. Haithcock and Lt. Col. Keene. These coaching sessions will be open for observation by all attendees. Podium time will vary from 40 minutes to 70 minutes depending on assigned repertoire. Additionally, there will be clinics with Mr. Haithcock conducting the West Point Band and addressing various conducting and rehearsing challenges. Participants will receive a DVD recording of their sessions with the band containing audio comments from Lt. Col. Keene.

The following evening (April 25), each participant will have the opportunity to conduct their assigned literature on a gala concert at the Association of Concert Bands National Convention (Bardavon Theatre, Poughkeepsie, NY)

This workshop is free and open to conducting participants and auditors. Conducting slots are limited. Attendees will pay their travel, food and lodging expenses. Applications are due (postmarked) by February 3, 2012.

Participants and auditors are encouraged to use web sites for reviews and recommendations. Many band members reside in Newburgh and the commute is not too difficult.
