"Dakota" was announced over the Air Battle Net, indicating the flight of four CH-47s with dual shotgun HMMWVs on long lines had reached the release point and would starburst to four separate landing zones. After about one minute of flight, all aircraft lost communication with each other due to the limited line of sight and aged, failing equipment. In zero illumination, I was in the lead aircraft using my limited experience and flight training to find an LZ, which was located along the border of a non-allied country in a very austere environment. Once we delivered the load and our passengers, we exited the LZ en route to the start point. Our plan was to link up with the flight as we returned to the pickup zone for one more trip into the objective area. Just shy of the SP, I heard a broken radio transmission over the ABN: "The HMMWVs are in a pile, but we're OK."

"We manned (our move) properly, we equipped them with everything they needed for all the phases (and) made sure everyone had the right training -- bottom line." This mentality earned the 159th CAB the Army's coveted Best of the Best Award in Washington, D.C., June 5.

Sgt. 1st Class Jay Karvaski, the 159th Combat Aviation Brigade's intelligence section NCO in charge, admits his boxing experience began much that way. "If you are out of line or out of regulation, he'll come at you strong, then afterward, once you've realized what's ... wrong, then comes the love -- the mentoring," said Sgt. Ryan Pillette, an intelligence specialist with HHC, 159th CAB. A good NCO knows his strengths. A better NCO knows his weaknesses. The best NCOs work to change those weaknesses, and Karvaski seems to aspire to that.

A Skytrain and a Flying Boxcar are the lucky recipients of a much-needed makeover here at Fort Campbell, Ky. The aircraft, a Douglas C-47 Skytrain and Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar, are on static display on the corner of Wickham and Entrance roads. Sun damage, lack of use and weather have all left signs of aging on the aircraft, but thanks to some friendly competition between the Army and the Air Force, these beautiful ladies will soon find their fine lines and wrinkles significantly erased.

Iron Rakkasans - both young and old - gathered Friday to remember the Battle of Hill 937, better known as Hamburger Hill. The 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Soldiers fought valiantly at Vietnam's Dong Ap Bia mountain in May 1969. A part of Operation Apache Snow, these Soldiers battled tough terrain to overcome the North Vietnamese forces' stronghold at the hill. The Rakkasans went on to eliminate more than 500 enemy troops and seize stores of weaponry.

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates announced March 1 his recommendaiton to the President that he nominate Army Gen. James D. Thurman to take command of U.S. Forces in the Republic of Korea. A native of Marietta, Okla., Thurman currently commands U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM), the U.S. Army's largest organization, where he is responsible for the oversight, manning, training, and equipping of 237,000 Active Component Soldiers and the training and readiness oversight of 560,000 Soldiers of the Army National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve. Dr. Gates made the announcement during a Pentagon press briefing. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Thurman would succeed Army Gen. Walter "Skip" Sharp in Korea who is set to retire after his tour as commander of the 28,500 U.S. troops stationed in South Korea.

Hosted by current and retired Delta Airlines employees and their family members, the lounge is a safe haven for the thousands of Soldiers, sailors, airman, Marines, Coast Guardsmen and their Families who travel through the world's busiest airport each holiday season. It provides free personal hygiene items, beverages, baked goods and snacks to military service members. Afghan National Army soldiers, supported by U.S. forces, have established a firm position in several areas of what is being called the Taliban's last stronghold, the horn of Panjwa'i, an area southwest of the Arghandab River.
