COL Carl A. Alex
Colonel Carl A. Alex enlisted in the Army in 1983 and is a 1987 Distinguished Military
Graduate from the Officer Candidate School. He holds a Master of Military Art and Science
degree from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Master of Science degrees
in Financial Management and Defense Analysis-Irregular Warfare from the Naval Post
Graduate School and a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy form the
National War College.
Colonel Alex served as a rifle platoon leader in C Company, 1st Battalion 503rd Infantry
Regiment (Air Assault) in Korea and as a rifle Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer
in B Company, 3rd Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment. After attending the Infantry Officer
Advanced Course, Colonel Alex commanded B Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry in the 1st
Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas and returned to the 75th Ranger Regiment to serve as
the Regimental Air Officer and the Plans and Exercise Officer. Following attendance at the
Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Colonel Alex served as the
G3 Chief of Operations for the 2nd Infantry Division, Operations Officer for 1st Battalion,
503rd Infantry Regiment and the Operations Officer for the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division
in Korea. Colonel Alex then served as the Infantry Branch Executive Officer and the
Lieutenant Colonel Assignments Officer at the Human Resources Command in Alexandria, Virginia.
Colonel Alex commanded the 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment in the 82nd
Airborne Division from May 2005 to July 2008 and 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne
Division from Feb 2010 to Mar 2012.
COL Alex’ decorations include: The Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal,
and Army Commendation Medal with V-Device. He has earned the Expert Infantryman’s Badge,
the Combat Infantryman’s Badge (2nd Award), the Ranger Tab, and Master Parachutist Badge
with Combat Jump Star. COL Alex has four combat duty tours.
