Senior Enlisted Liaison

The Senior Enlisted Liaison serves as a key staff member in presenting the enlisted perspective on health care issues that affect enlisted personnel and their families.

MISSION: To establish and sustain open lines of communication with Senior Enlisted Leadership of all Services and components in the Latin America and Canada Area; provide up-to-date information on the ever-changing health benefit; and facilitate resolution if complex or systematic problems arise.

Many of the issues that our fellow enlisted members have addressed can be resolved through basic TRICARE education including claims issues, eligibility, special family member needs, benefit questions, traveling with TRICARE, and Prime/Prime Remote enrollment information. The first step for answers to any TRICARE-related topic should be the closest TRICARE Service Center or you can click on www.tricare.mil and enter your profile. Another avenue for assistance is the Beneficiary Counseling and Assistance Coordinator (BCAC), located at every military treatment facility (MTF). If the issue cannot be resolved at that level then I can be your next step for education or assistance.

CONTACT: If you would like to coordinate a site visit from the Senior Enlisted Liaison, or if you have any suggestions for the site, please click here to send an e-mail to the Senior Enlisted Liaison.

How is TRICARE Latin America and Canada different from TRICARE in the United States?

There are a few key differences:

  1. Enrollment in TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas is limited to active duty and their family members who are command sponsored. Overseas MTFs may not have the resources to support patients who have not cleared a medical screening and/or are not required by the military to be in the overseas location.
  2. Retired service members and their families can receive care at local Latin American MTFs and in Canada care can be received at any local Canadian Forces Treatment Facility on a space-available basis only.
  3. You are less likely to be assigned a civilian primary care provider (unless you are serving in a remote location).
  4. While the TRICARE Standard option is available overseas, the Extra option is not.
  5. When accessing health care from host nation providers, you may need the assistance of a patient liaison who can provide translation and interpreter services. They will arrange daily visits if you or a family member is hospitalized in a host-nation facility. Simply visit your TRICARE Service Center to inquire about this service.
Did you know? Family members must be command sponsored to enroll in TRICARE Prime Overseas, TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas or the TRICARE Dental Program.

Did you know? If you are the sponsor of a child who is enrolled full time at an accredited institution of higher education and provide more than 50 percent of financial support, your child may be eligible for TRICARE coverage until age 23, or when your full-time status ends, whichever comes first.
