4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade Deputy Commanding Officer

LTC Dale Scherer was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers in April 1989. He is a Distinguished Military Graduate of the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Western Michigan University where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Automotive Technology and Management. Concurrently, he served as a Panel Bridge Platoon Leader in the Michigan Army National Guard until he entered active duty in the United States Army in January 1991.

Upon graduating from the EN Officers Basic Course in June 1991, he was assigned to the 4th Engineer Battalion (Combat) at Ft Carson, CO. While assigned to the Battalion he served in several positions to include Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Assistant S3 Operations until July 1994.

LTC Scherer graduated from the EN Officers Advance Course in April 1995 and subsequently was assigned as the S3 Training Officer in the 130th Engineer Brigade at Hanau, Germany. During his tenure the unit deployed to Croatia in support of Operation Joint Endeavor.

In March 1996, he joined the 94th Engineer Battalion (Combat Heavy) as the S3 Construction Officer prior to assuming command in June 1996 of Alpha Company (Combat Heavy) at Camp Steel Castle, Tuzla, Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Following the units return to Germany and completing company command, LTC Scherer was selected to join the “Mustangs” Brigade Observer/Controller Team at Hohenfels, Germany in December 1997. He served as the Assistant Brigade Engineer Trainer and then the Brigade Engineer Trainer until May 1999.

In April 1999, he reported to Fort Leonard Wood, MO as an Engineer Captains Career Course Small Group Instructor followed by assignment as Chief, Transformation Division in the Department of Instruction for the United States Army Engineer School.

In August 2003, LTC Scherer attended Command and General Staff Officers Course at Fort Leavenworth, KS with a follow on assignment in June 2004 as the Brigade Engineer for 1st BCT (Stryker), 25th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, WA. In September 2004 the unit deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In April 2005, LTC Scherer redeployed to Fort Lewis, WA where he assumed duties as the Battalion S3 of the 14th Engineer Battalion (Corps) (Wheeled). The Battalion deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in October 2005 with the primary mission of Corps MSR route clearance operations.

In December 2006, upon completion of the Joint and Combined Warfighting School, LTC Scherer reported to NATO HQ in Naples, Italy as the Engineer Intelligence Branch Chief on the Joint Engineer Staff. He served in this joint-multinational organization until he was selected to serve as a Stability Transition Team Chief with the 3rd BCT (AAB), 4th Infantry Division in Iraq beginning in March 2010 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom/ Operation New Dawn.

After redeploying in March 2011, LTC Scherer was assigned to the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence, Fort Leonard Wood, MO as the Deputy G3/G33. In September 2011, he reported as the Deputy Commanding Officer for the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.

LTC Scherer’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (2 OLC), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (3 OLC), the NATO Medal, the Combat Action Badge, the Ranger Tab, the Sapper Tab, and the Parachutist’s Badge.

LTC Scherer is married to the former Colleen Moselle and has two sons and two daughters.
