Kristine Brown, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District Park Ranger and Water Safety Program Manager, was selected as the 2012 Ronald J. Ruffennach Communicator of the Year - an award to recognize a member of the Corps outside of the Public Affairs career field for his/her outstanding contributions in communicating the USACE missions and programs. She is presented with the award by Lt. Gen. Thomas P. Bostick, U.S. Army Chief of Engineers and Commanding General of the USACE, at the 2012 Senior Leaders Conference in Little Rock, Ark. August 2012.
NUECES COUNTY, Texas (March 2012) – Work is underway to deepen the La Quinta Channel extension using a pipeline dredge in Nueces County, Texas. Work includes creating a beneficial use site with a scheduled completion of May 2013.
GALVESTON, Texas (April 12, 2012) - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District
HOUSTON (April 14, 2011) - Al Meyer, a project engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District, holds a European Barn Owl during a visit to a dredge placement area in the Houston Ship Channel to review the bird abatement program which began March 6. The barn owl is one of nearly a dozen birds used in this innovative and environmentally sensitive effort to temporarily deter migratory birds from nesting in the project site until the construction phase concludes this summer. Meyer serves as the lead engineer in charge of the Houston Galveston Navigation Channel Multiple Site Repairs.
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (2010) - Brownsville Resident Engineer Kenneth (Chip) Worley, monitors the placement of dredged material on the beach of South Padre Island. Beach renourishment, also called beneficial use, employs environmentally and economically responsible ways to utilize dredged materials to benefit local communities, including improving eroded coastlines.
TEXAS CITY, Texas (Oct. 29, 2011) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, together with the City of Texas City, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the 400-feet-wide channel (which was deepened from 40 to 45 feet in a dredging project that began in 2009). Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison was the honored guest speaker. The $75 million project originally slated to take five years to complete, was finished in less than two years. The project was completed using ARRA funds.
