Beneficial Use of Dredged Material

Shoreline Protection at South Padre Island, Texas

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District contributes to the well-being, economic success and quality of life of local communities through beneficial use of dredged material. Annually, the Galveston District dredges approximately 30 to 40 million cubic yards of material. If placed on one city block, the material would create a mountain 14,000 feet above sea level. While undertaking its mission of keeping America’s waterways navigable, the Corps is able to turn that into an added benefit for homeowners, tourists and businesses. The Corps employs environmentally and economically responsible ways to utilize dredged materials to benefit local communities and improve eroded coastlines through beach nourishment and beneficial use programs.

Dredged Material Workshop

The Dredged Material Workshop, co-sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District, Port of Houston Authority and the Environmental Protection Agency; was held at the PHA Bayport Terminal July 24, 2012, to discuss water and sediment testing and coordination requirements for dredged material and engineering and management of confined disposal facilities.

The day-long workshop was attended by about 40 people from the USACE Engineer Research Development Center; Texas Commission on Environmental Quality; Air Alliance Houston; PHA; EPA and the Corps. Held to facilitate EPA's understanding of the Corps' dredging program in relation to issues raised by AAH over the last year with EPA, staff discussed issues ranging from basic dredging operations and disposal options to the legal and regulatory requirements for water and sediment testing, testing protocols and interpretation, dioxin test results for the Houston Ship Channel and the engineering design, operation, and management of CDFs.

The USACE HQ, ERDC, EPA, USACE Galveston District and PHA staff provided the following presentations.
