CFC thermometer

I am honored to serve as the 2012 Chairperson of the Chambersburg Area Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). I was privileged to serve in this same role three years ago. And you ask why would I do it again?

The reason is simple. I want to help improve the quality of life for a child, an elderly neighbor, or perhaps even a co-worker’s family member or our veterans who need assistance getting back on their feet.

That is why I am doing it again. And I have another opportunity to promote CFC’s philanthropy mission that is employee focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all.

We all face tough economic times, and some areas have been hit harder than others.  One of the poorest areas in the United States is the Appalachia’s in Western Maryland.  I know because I was born there. I have roots there.

And I am very aware of the tough economic times we all face. I read the newspapers and watch the news. I fill up my vehicle and dig deeper to pay the $3.85 a gallon price. What used to be a monthly car payment is now the price of one tank of gas! Folks are still struggling to get back on their feet after surviving a medical emergency, a family crisis, a job loss, a victim of a violent crime or a natural disaster.

As a nation, we are the most prosperous in the world!  How can you not look to your fellow man, woman or child and help?  It isn’t the amount we give but how we give with our hearts.  I ask each and every one of you to join me and take this opportunity to do what we can to help those who are in need.

We are fortunate to be able to take advantage of CFC’s leg work in identifying and qualifying charities and providing the ease in which donations can be made.  To those of you who have given in the past and continue to give, I send you my heartfelt thanks.  There is not a day that goes by that I don’t see or experience the impact of your generosity within our community.  To those of you who are new federal employees or have not been able to give in the past, I ask that you take a look at your finances to see what you can afford to give.  What a great impact we can have if everyone would give at least $1 a pay period.  That $1 doesn’t sound like a lot, but if all of us gave this amount per pay period, what a huge impact it would have on the community. You would also have the satisfaction and pride that comes with knowing you helped a neighbor in need. I don’t know what pulls on your heartstrings but just think by getting one less cup of coffee a week from whatever name brand store you stop at in the mornings could be used to assist the homeless, the needy and the ones who need your assistance by just a small reallocation of your resources.

As a Federal employee, you can donate hassle-free through the CFC, the world’s largest workplace giving campaign.  You determine how much you want to donate and to which participating organization you want to give to.  Even the smallest of donations can go a long way towards improving the lives of others, and payroll deduction is the simplest way for you to contribute.  Payroll deduction lets you spread out your contribution over the entire year.  For example, if you make the minimum required payroll deduction contribution of $1 and there are 26 pay periods in one year, your total contribution will be $26.  As you can see, distributing your contribution throughout the year may allow you to contribute a larger amount and increase the benefits you can provide.

Through your federal employment, you have already demonstrated your commitment to America.  The CFC is a great opportunity to further extend your public service by supporting charitable organizations which often provide services and benefits beyond what is available through the government.

In the words of President John F. Kennedy, who established the CFC via Presidential Order in 1961, “And so, my fellow Americans:  ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.”  Through the CFC you can make a difference in our community, our nation, and around the world.

I thank all of you for your generosity in this year’s campaign and for giving to the organization of your choice.  Your contribution will make a difference in someone’s life! Rest well, and thank you for all the support for making this year’s CFC a success.
