James McCauley
Captain, USCG
Commandant of Cadets, U.S. Coast Guard Academy

Captain McCauley assumed his duties as Commandant of Cadets, U.S. Coast Guard Academy in June 2012.

Captain McCauley is a surface operations officer with 13 years at sea, including command of four cutters. Prior to reporting to the Coast Guard Academy, he served as Commanding Officer of USCGC Rush (WHEC 723) in Honolulu, Hawaii. Under his command, Rush participated in the world’s largest international joint maritime operation and conducted search and rescue and law enforcement throughout the Western and Central Pacific Islands and Alaska.

Captain McCauley’s other afloat assignments include: Deck Watch Officer and First Lieutenant aboard USCGC Dependable (WMEC 626) in Panama City Beach, Florida; Commanding Officer of USCGC Cape Shoalwater (WPB 95324) in West Palm Beach, Florida; Executive Officer of USCGC Spar (WLB 403) in South Portland, Maine; Commanding Officer of USCGC Firebush (WLB 393) in Kodiak, Alaska, and Commanding Officer of USCGC Storis (WMEC 38) in Kodiak, Alaska.

Previous assignments ashore include: Seamanship Instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; Ocean Engineer and Design Team Leader at Coast Guard Civil Engineering Unit Providence in Warwick, Rhode Island; Chief of the Cutter Acquisition Division, Office of Cutter Forces, Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C.; and the Coast Guard Attaché to Canada at the U.S. Defense Attaché Office in Ottawa, Ontario.

Captain McCauley is a 1985 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Coast Guard Academy, a Master of Science in Ocean Engineering from the University of Rhode Island, and has been a licensed Master of Steam or Motor Vessels, Any Ocean since 2003.

Captain McCauley’s military decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, three Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medals, the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, two Coast Guard Achievement Medals, the Navy Achievement Medal, the Distinguished Pistol Marksmanship Badge, and various unit and team awards.
