The Counterintelligence Division's strategic goal is to protect the United States against foreign intelligence operations and espionage. It accomplishes this by interacting with the U.S. law enforcement and intelligence communities to neutralize the intelligence activities of foreign countries, and entities that pose a significant threat to the United States.

Types of Work Performed

The Special Agents and Professional Staff employees who work in the Counterintelligence Division are responsible for a wide variety of functions, including:

  • Performing a variety of analytical and advisory tasks to inform FBI decision makers
  • Developing management plans, procedures, and methodologies
  • Conducting research, collecting information, and sharing information
  • Assisting field personnel with investigative counterintelligence operations
  • Completing clerical and administrative functions
  • Performing budgetary assignments (distribution of funds, travel vouchers, etc.)
  • Conducting inventory and maintenance of computer/property/equipment, etc.
  • Delivering presentations and briefings
  • Coordinating conferences
  • Producing logical and concise written products
  • Providing training to employees
  • Dealing with security issues

Critical Skills/Desirable Backgrounds

The critical skills of interest to the Counterintelligence Division include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Knowledge of foreign cultures, international relations, and/or national security issues
  • Computer skills; including the ability to utilize word processing software, database software (e.g., Access), electronic mail, and query ability for Internet/open source database skills
  • Knowledge of property and space management
  • Knowledge of budget matters

Career Advancement Opportunities

The Counterintelligence Division has positions that start from GS-5 and advance to the GS-15 level. Each position within the Division has its own career path. Promotions are merit based and require the demonstrated ability to perform higher-level duties.

Training Requirements and Opportunities

The Counterintelligence Division has a continuing education requirement of 15 hours annually. The Division encourages employees to avail themselves of training opportunities applicable to their positions. Training is offered through the FBI, the United States Intelligence Community (USIC), as well as government and private vendors on a variety of topics.

Travel Requirements

There are professional positions within the Counterintelligence Division that offer travel opportunities. Usually, travel is domestic to support field investigations or to attend conferences, symposiums and training hosted by the FBI or other USIC agencies. International travel is also possible, but limited.
