Today, House Speaker John Boehner named Rep. Trey Gowdy (SC-04) to the House and Senate conference committee reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act.  Eight members from the House of Representatives will join Senate nominees to negotiate differences in the drafts.

Rep. Gowdy said, “I am grateful to the Speaker for allowing me to serve on the Violence Against Women conference committee. The issue of violence against women is so very important and transcends politics.”

Speaker Boehner added, “Completing work on legislation to renew and strengthen the Violence Against Women Act is critical in our efforts to combat domestic violence and sexual assault.  The law has broad, bipartisan support in both chambers, and I’m announcing our negotiators today in the hopes that we can begin to resolve the differences between the House and Senate bills.  The House is ready and willing to begin those discussions, and I would urge Senate Democrats to come to the table so this critical legislation can be sent to the president for his signature as soon as possible.”

Congressman Gowdy is a member of the House Committee on the Judiciary.  H.R. 4970, the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization of 2012 was passed by the committee on May 15, 2012 and passed by the House of Representatives on May 16, 2012.  The Senate received the legislation on May 21, 2012.
